The Walking Dead franchise has gone back to its walker rules and brought back the smarter undead AMC first showed in Season 1.
Back in those early episodes, walkers picked up rocks and smashed windows, tested doorknobs, climbed, and even seemed to hang on to scraps of memory. Then, after Season 1, they turned into slower, simpler shamblers, which created one of the biggest continuity headaches in the franchise. Robert Kirkman has said those smarter walkers came out of Frank Darabont’s original version of the show. Once Darabont left, the rules were reset. AMC later tried to stitch that together with the final season’s variants, Angela Kang’s callback, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’s France-based strains, experiments, and faster walkers, even though the series spent years mostly acting like those abilities hardly existed.
If you’ve followed the franchise for years, this retcon is pretty easy to accept, and I think it’s a smart fix on paper, even if it doesn’t make the contradiction disappear or clear up the other realism gaps around fuel, ammo, working vehicles, decomposition, ethanol production, and The Walking Dead: Dead City’s corpse-made methane.
