One of the most interesting games announced for 2026 is Nekome: Nazi Hunter, a game, literally, about killing Nazis. In it we play as Vano, a young Romani man who, in true Inglourious Basterds fashion, after seeing the Nazis kill his entire family decides to take revenge on them in the most direct way possible. That gives us a gameplay experience as intense as it is politically charged.
Political, but not much
Except that in an interview with the online outlet But Why Tho? its developers, Probably Monsters, denied that their game has any political element to it. According to Kay Willis, production lead on the game, “there’s something really interesting about the psychology behind cathartic games and things like that. That said, we’re not making a political game or anything”. They added that they don’t intend to make any kind of political statement with their game.
How you can make a game about killing Nazi soldiers with a young Romani man whose family has been murdered without talking about politics is beyond us, because it seems impossible —it’s always going to say something about what’s happening; it’s going to judge one side or the other and what they have or haven’t done during the game—, but it’s what its developers say. And while everyone should make up their own mind about this take on the game, there’s no doubt that many people will feel disappointed to learn that the developers of the Nazi-killing game don’t think anything in particular about the Nazis.
