There’s nothing inherently wrong with remasters. Many games benefit tremendously from them. Games that need a facelift, a graphical or mechanical refresh, without necessarily changing the game’s basic elements. A remaster is simply that: updating something that may have aged but needs a coat of paint, not to be rebuilt. Something that, when it doesn’t aim to replace the original, always has a positive aspect.
The latest game to receive a remaster is Dusk. A game published by New Blood Interactive, released in 2018, and its new version, Dusk HD, showcases redesigned graphics for all visual elements of the game, including enemies and weapon models, along with new models and animations.
If you’re not familiar with Dusk, you should know that this game heavily draws from ’90s and early ’00s shooters. Heavily inspired by Doom, Quake, Blood, and Half-Life, featuring a heavy metal soundtrack, exquisite gunplay, and a psychotronic story mixing government conspiracies and strange mystical experiments, the game stands as one of the best shooters in recent years. A true homage to the so-called “boomer shooters.”
All of this also comes with an even more promising addition. Unfortunately, it’s not ready yet. Alongside this HD version, Dusk has received an update that adds compatibility with Steam Workshop, allowing for easy inclusion of mods within the game. What hasn’t arrived on time, as there are still a few weeks left until it’s finished, is an official development kit for modders to work with literally all the models, textures, and environments of Dusk, as mentioned by the game’s developer, David Szimanski.
The best news of all is that if you already own Dusk, all of this is literally free. Dusk HD is a DLC for the original Dusk that introduces the available mods in the Steam Workshop. And if you don’t have it yet, you’re in luck because the game is currently discounted by 66%, priced at 5.77€. An absolutely insane price for a small yet great masterpiece.
