Today, Star Wars has become a gigantic franchise with several series, movies, anthologies, spin-offs, books, comics and much more. However, when in 1977 George Lucas changed the world with A New Hope, everything was different. From what we know now, the plan was to make 12 movies… and very different from what has ended up being.
A lot has happened since Lucas came up with the franchise. Originally, the story was going to be very different, but between the plot itself changing and, much later, Disney getting in on his plans and doing something completely different, Lucas’ original plan never came to fruition.
An idea that has changed over the years
In the above post-it we can see what George Lucas’ first idea for Star Wars was. The first chapters were quite similar to what eventually happened. Episode I was envisioned as a sort of “Prelude” and Episodes II through IV would have been a “clone Wars trilogy” similar to what Episodes I through III eventually ended up being.
As for Episode V, it would be a sort of “Epilogue + Prologue” that would contain the stories of the first trilogy along with a transition to the next… and this is where the original trilogy would come in (chapters IV through XI, which were to be VI through VIII). These were the only ones that, in the notes, received a more detailed description.
Finally, episodes IX to XI would be a next trilogy, and episode XII a conclusion to his entire story. Although we don’t know in great detail what all this would be about, we do know that among Lucas’ plans was the idea of a story of a young Obi-Wan Kenobi and how the Emperor took over the Republic, something we finally did see in his next films.
