Since well before the launch of Apple Intelligence, Tim Cook has been giving us hints of what was to come. He was never too explicit, very much in line with his comments to the press, but he did mention one thing that he was absolutely right about: Apple Intelligence stands out in something that no other company has.
An unprecedented integration
The key to the success of Apple Intelligence lies not only in the capabilities of the technology itself, which are certainly impressive, but in how it is used and integrated into the devices and services we use in our daily lives. Apple’s AI is present in all aspects of the operating system, from photos to applications, through screen content, and beyond. This deep integration allows for a smooth and consistent user experience, something that other companies have not achieved with the same mastery.
Apple has created an environment where AI, whether it’s Apple Intelligence or ChatGPT through its integration with iOS 18, can interact directly and effectively with the system and even with third-party applications. Developers have access to tools that allow them to integrate advanced AI functionalities into apps without having to reinvent the wheel. A seemingly simple gesture that opens the door to new possibilities that were previously unthinkable.
While Google has done an admirable job integrating AI into Android, there are still significant differences in the depth and effectiveness of this integration compared to Apple. In Android, although AI is present and Google is responsible for the operating system and the AI itself, ecosystem fragmentation, device variability, and the spectrum of third-party app design limit its effectiveness.
Apple, on the other hand, is responsible for both the hardware and software, and when it comes to apps, the App Store guidelines provide a consistent experience from APIs to design language. Starting from here, we are talking about convenience.
It is clear that we can open the ChatGPT app on our iPhone today to ask a question, but it’s one step further. Copying the text from an email and asking GPT to correct it? Who does that? Now with iOS 18, this correction will be just a single tap away.
Integration is more important than capabilities
The importance of AI does not only lie in its capabilities, but in how it integrates into our daily lives and in each of our tasks. The most advanced technology has no value if it cannot be used in an extremely intuitive and effective way. I believe that Apple has understood this from the beginning and has focused its design and structure on making AI accessible and useful for everyone in what matters to all of us.
Apple Intelligence is responsible, on the device, for deciding how to process each request. From direct processing to querying ChatGPT to Apple’s private cloud computing, efficiency is at the core of every interaction. If we add to that the fact that Google Gemini and Claude could also be integrated into iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia —although not Meta— and enjoy the same flexibility and frictionless experience, we are, as we started saying, facing something that no other company has.
Tim Cook was right. The integration of AI into the Apple ecosystem is unparalleled, not only because of its technical capabilities, but also because of how it has been designed to continuously and almost invisibly enhance and enrich the user experience. Just what we need from AI.
