Shogun 2 is getting another run. Creative Assembly says Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition hits PC on October 13, bringing back the 2011 strategy game with all of its major add-ons and a stack of current-gen touch-ups.
This version packs in the base game, Rise of the Samurai, Fall of the Samurai, and all faction packs. On top of that, it adds 4K and ultrawide support, modernized controls, a 64-bit engine, full Japanese and Chinese voice acting and text, and more than 50 newly playable minor factions.
If you missed Total War: Shogun 2 the first time around, this looks like the simplest all-in-one way to play one of the series’ best entries. It might be worth a look.
Older fans, though, aren’t reacting with pure hype. There’s excitement, sure, but also a lot of skepticism, mostly about Creative Assembly making this a paid upgrade instead of offering existing owners a free path or at least a discount. The other sticking point is mod support moving over to Mod.io. That means current Steam Workshop mods won’t work out of the box, and the community could end up split for a while until those mods get ported over.
Still, the game itself is getting a warm early response, and it’s not hard to see why. A cleaned-up re-release of Shogun 2 fits neatly with the recent wave of polished older games coming back, and it puts the focus back on Total War’s historical side while Creative Assembly keeps supporting Total War: Warhammer III.
If these upgrades actually land the way they’re supposed to, Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition could end up as the version people point to from now on.
You’ll be able to pick up Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition on PC on October 13.
