Riot Games’ tactical shooter Valorant is now part of the Grade 10 curriculum in the Philippines. Under the Department of Education’s Matatag Curriculum, it’s being used in a digital wellness lesson.
The program goes further than just putting students in front of the game for a class period. Grade 10 lessons use Valorant to teach core objectives, game mechanics, match strategy, agent roles, team composition, tactical decision-making, teamwork, communication, time management, sportsmanship, respectful online behavior, and even the basics of planning an esports event. Schools working under the same curriculum can also choose League of Legends, Dota 2, Hearthstone, StarCraft II, Rocket League, Minecraft, FIFA, PUBG, and Tekken. Put together, that points to a wider effort around esports literacy, personal wellness, digital citizenship, and healthy living.
The Philippines isn’t the only place trying this. Similar programs have taken shape in Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea, and parts of Europe, and the timing lines up with industry forecasts that put the esports-in-education market at about $3.2 billion in 2025, then climbing toward $8.1 billion by 2034.
For anyone who follows esports or education policy, this one has real stakes. Supporters say programs like this can strengthen strategy, motivation, teamwork, and communication. Critics are still uneasy about the competitive pressure, the stress, the screen time, and how little long-term evidence there still is, even in a country where Mapúa University and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines have already played a part in esports’ growth.
