Standalone Counter-Strike: Global Offensive came back to Steam in March 2026, but Counter-Strike 2 is still the main Counter-Strike release, and it’s not especially close. Public Steam player-tracking numbers have CS2 regularly sitting around 700,000 to 1.1 million concurrent players, with daily peaks clearing 1.3 million and often pushing close to 1.4 million. Standalone CS:GO, which returned to Steam in March 2026, usually tops out somewhere around 60,000 to 70,000. So if you saw the early re-release headlines and started wondering whether CS:GO was taking back the crown, the player counts don’t back that up.
CS2 has already put up the biggest peak the series has ever seen. Public Steam peak-tracking data shows Counter-Strike 2 beating CS:GO’s all-time high of about 1.81 million with more than 1.86 million concurrent players in April 2025. Even so, some players are drifting back to CS:GO because they miss the older feel and the community servers. That’s happening even without official Valve matchmaking, full ongoing support, or access to the skins a lot of fans assumed would still be part of the package.
If you want the version most players, pros, and tournaments are actually moving toward, Counter-Strike 2 is the one to download. The changeover is still pretty divisive, though. CS2 brings upgraded visuals and dynamic smokes, while plenty of players still swear by peak CS:GO movement, shooting feel, and optimization. Valve is also reworking the esports side, with ranking-based and open-qualifier invites replacing franchised leagues.
