Virtua Fighter Crossroads, Sega’s sixth mainline Virtua Fighter and the series revival fans have been waiting on for years, showed up at Evo 2026 with a 2027 target still in place. The big reveal was the Bakunawa Killer, a masked new antagonist in a black qipao who already looks like a serious problem.
What has people talking is Pai Chan’s reaction in the trailer. When the mask comes off, she looks genuinely rattled. That’s why a lot of fans think this isn’t a completely new fighter at all, but someone returning. Lau Chan and Lei-Fei are the names coming up most often. Sega hasn’t confirmed any of it, but the setup feels a lot more personal than Virtua Fighter usually does, maybe a rival story, maybe a family conflict.
The name matters too. “Bakunawa” points to a dragon-like figure from Filipino mythology, which lines up with the fictional Southeast Asian city of Vilasapara. That makes this character feel built into Virtua Fighter Crossroads’ setting and themes, not like a random late addition.
Crossroads is the first brand-new core Virtua Fighter in almost 20 years, and Sega’s treating it like more than a simple comeback. There are new characters, redesigned veterans, and a cinematic single-player story mode. If you’ve followed the series for any length of time, this is the kind of reveal you’ll want to keep an eye on.
There’s still nothing to download. Sega and RGG Studio are aiming for 2027 after first teasing Virtua Fighter Crossroads back in November 2024, following the 2021 push for Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown and the renewed interest in 3D fighters around Tekken and Dead or Alive.
