We are about to witness a historic change with WWDC 2024 and Apple’s AI, and it all started during the Christmas holidays of 2022 for one of its top executives. According to the Wall Street Journal, it was Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple, who triggered the significant change in the company’s artificial intelligence strategy that we will soon see the results of.
A project that has been underway since early 2023
During his Christmas vacation, Federighi had the opportunity to test the code autocompletion features of GitHub Copilot, one of the first AI-supported products by Microsoft. He was so impressed with the capabilities of this tool that, upon returning to his work at Apple, he issued an internal mandate to his team to explore and productize as many artificial intelligence functionalities as possible. This moment marked a turning point in how Apple approached AI, shifting from a cautious approach to a much bolder and riskier attitude.
According to the WSJ, there had been some tensions between the software group led by Federighi and the artificial intelligence and machine learning division led by John Giannandrea. The lack of coordination, mainly, and some differences in the perception of technology made it difficult to integrate their work. In fact, the software group even developed their own image and video recognition tools independently, as it was easier for them to work independently.
However, it seems that these anecdotes belong to the past. According to the article, Federighi and Giannandrea are now much more aligned, and Apple’s executive leadership is willing to be at the forefront and take on the risks associated with large language model (LLM) technology.
In the upcoming WWDC conference, Apple plans to introduce a new range of AI features in its operating systems. Among the expected innovations are an improved version of Siri with advanced conversational capabilities, automatic messaging and notification summaries, AI-enhanced quick replies for messages and emails, deeper integration of audio transcription services, enhanced Spotlight search, generative photo editing, assisted document generation in Pages, and much more. It’s a really long list that, as far as we know, began to be compiled in early 2023, after the Christmas break.
It is clear that generative AI technology is still in the development phase. We have seen cases where, quite calmly, an AI provides completely incorrect information to an apparently simple question. In this context, an interesting point of the upcoming WWDC will be to see how Apple will balance innovations in this field with its strict quality and privacy standards.
Although we have talked about a hybrid strategy between cloud and local execution or a separate service, what remains to be seen is to what extent AI is integrated into the system. The joint work of software and AI teams within Apple is about to bear fruit. We will see how the company surprises us with what has been dubbed the most important update in the history of the iPhone.
