WhatsApp has just rolled out a comprehensive wave of updates that significantly enhance the experience in chats, calls and channels. These changes aim to make the platform more intuitive, social and functional—especially for iPhone users, who are seeing some exclusive features arrive first.
New features for chats and groups
WhatsApp introduces a live “online” indicator for group members, helping users know who’s currently available to chat. Message reactions have also become easier to access and use. A standout update is the new notification filter for groups: users can now choose to be alerted only for mentions, replies and messages from saved contacts.
Additionally, event creation now works in private chats, with added options like RSVP status, guest lists and end times. iPhone users can also scan documents directly within the app, a feature still pending for Android.
Upgrades in voice and video calls
Call enhancements focus on clarity and flexibility. iPhone users can now zoom during video calls with a pinch gesture. Participants can also be added mid-call directly from the chat window, streamlining group calls. WhatsApp says it has improved video quality by better adapting to bandwidth, reducing freezing and dropped calls.
Improvements for channels and creators
Channels now allow admins to record and share short 60-second video notes, making communication more personal and direct. One of the most anticipated features—voice message transcriptions—has started to roll out, making it easier to follow updates when listening isn’t convenient. Admins can also generate QR codes to invite followers directly to their channels.
These updates are already available to some users and will continue to roll out progressively.
