As artificial intelligence continues to expand across messaging platforms, WhatsApp is now testing an AI-powered feature that summarizes unread messages in individual chats, groups, and channels. While this aims to streamline our digital lives, it also raises pressing questions about how our private conversations are being processed.
How the AI summaries work
WhatsApp’s new feature appears in the form of a “Summarize with Meta AI” button that replaces the usual “X unread messages” label when a backlog is detected. Once tapped, it generates a concise recap of the conversation, helping users catch up faster without scrolling through lengthy threads.
This function is currently being tested only on Android devices within the beta version, and users must opt in through a setting called Private Processing. The system works in the cloud but, according to WhatsApp, none of the message content is stored or tied to user identity. All summaries are supposedly deleted immediately after being created.
A closer look at privacy concerns
Despite WhatsApp’s reassurances, many are left wondering whether cloud-based AI can truly guarantee privacy. While end-to-end encryption remains in place, AI processing still happens outside the device, even if in isolated environments. Conversations that use Advanced Privacy will have the feature automatically disabled, which offers some peace of mind.
The broader question persists: Are we trading control for convenience? As AI tools become more embedded in messaging, users must weigh the benefits of smarter interfaces against the potential erosion of data autonomy.
What else is coming?
Also in development is a feature called “Writing Help” that will refine tone and clarity before messages are sent. Like summaries, it will rely on the same cloud-based infrastructure, reinforcing the platform’s move toward a privacy-aware but AI-enhanced experience.
