Who is Jon Rahm? The only European golfer to win two major trophies in one season.

He has just been proclaimed champion of the Augusta 2023 Master after losing the entire tournament. Is John Rahm the best Spanish golfer in history?

Jon Rahm is making headlines today after winning the second major of his golfing career last night. For that reason, many people are asking the same question today: who is Jon Rahm? Let’s take a look.

Jon Rahm Rodriguez (Barrika, Biscay, November 10, 1994) is a Spanish professional golfer who has been dazzling the world for the past five years thanks to his extremely high level and quality.

Jon Rahm made such a good impression on college talent scouts that he was soon plucked from Barrica, his hometown, and put on the fast track to the top of the world golf rankings.

Don’t call him Jon Rahm, call him Rahmbo

The Spaniard caused a sensation during his time at Arizona State University, but resisted turning pro until he graduated with a degree in Communication Sciences.

A powerful player, but also gifted with incredible finesse and an uncanny ability to sink long putts, he was given a nickname by his peers: the Jon Rahmbo.

Rahm joined the Sun Devils for the 2012-13 collegiate season and won the Bill Cullum Invitational and the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic in his freshman year. He was also named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2012 and 2013.

By the time he left Arizona State, Rahm had amassed an impressive 11 collegiate tournament victories and had also claimed the Spanish Amateur title in 2014 and 2015.

He was the first golfer to win the Ben Hogan Award twice and also finished in the top five at the Phoenix Open on the PGA Tour while still an amateur.

After dominating the amateur rankings in 2015, he received the Mark H. McCormack Medal, which allowed him to participate in the 2016 U.S. Open and Open Championship.

Before turning professional, he was also awarded the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award as the top collegiate golfer.

He was the number one amateur in the world for a record 60 weeks in two stints between April 2015 and June 2016.

His career as a golf professional: all successes

Rahm’s decision to turn professional came with high expectations following his brilliant amateur career. Rahm turned pro in 2016 shortly after impressing as the top-ranked amateur at the U.S. Open.

His first tour victory demonstrated his flair for the dramatic when he holed a 20-yard putt on the final hole to win the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open in his rookie campaign on the PGA Tour. This earned him a top-50 finish in the world rankings.

Rahm enjoyed a tremendous run in his first WGC Match Play. He lost the final to Dustin Johnson, but showed great fighting spirit to come back from a five-shot deficit and force the final to the 18th hole.

He has enjoyed success on both the PGA Tour and European Tour, claiming the Irish Open twice and with two titles won in his native Spain.

At the end of 2018 he made his Ryder Cup debut, a week in which he won the singles over Tiger Woods, and shortly after was invited to and won Woods’ Hero World Challenge.

From 2022 to 2023: a legendary golfer

Rahm racked up multiple victories on the PGA and European tours, and the 2020 Memorial Tournament win made him the 24th man (and second Spaniard) to top the world golf rankings, a position he would relinquish in early 2022.

In the world of golf, a Major is like a Grand Slam in tennis, and this one was still eluding him, but Rahm climbed that mountain with a brilliant victory in the 2021 US Open.

Today he has lifted his second major, with the 2023 Augusta Masters. In this way, Jon Rahm has worn for the first time the mythical green jacket of the tournament, that which is reserved for the winner of the Grande. The Yellow Jersey of golf, to continue with the similes.

Jon Rahm has earned a place in the world of golf and is already a legend for the sport in Spain.

The big question is whether he will become the best golfer in the history of our country, although Seve Ballesteros, Jose María Olazabal and Sergio García have a lot to say.
