Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has hinted that there is significant potential to continue the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle franchise, developed by MachineGames. In a recent interview, Spencer confirmed that Xbox is “really happy” with the game and suggested a promising future for the series, stating: “We believe there is life in that franchise.” This statement comes just days before the title’s release on PlayStation 5, scheduled for April 17, marking a significant milestone for Xbox’s expansion strategy into new markets.
A more transmedia Xbox is possible
Spencer also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of developing more original games based on the intellectual properties created by Xbox. He emphasized the need to tell new stories and stressed the desire to give development teams the opportunity to create their own franchises. “Looking to the future, I want to make sure that is an option for us,” he stated, underscoring that Xbox has “plenty of room to tell new stories.”
So far this year, Xbox has released titles such as Avowed, an action RPG developed by Obsidian, and South of Midnight from Compulsion Games, both part of Xbox Game Studios. However, despite speculation surrounding the upcoming release of the Minecraft movie, Spencer reaffirmed that there are no plans to shift Xbox’s focus to other media. “I want our team to remain very focused on being a video game organization,” he stated.
Finally, while the future of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle remains uncertain, Spencer’s comments open the door to the possibility that this historic franchise could expand, while Xbox seeks to strengthen its portfolio of original IPs.
