Xbox presents at its Showcase the new installment of the Persona franchise

Last Sunday, June 7, the Xbox Games Showcase took place where some of the most important titles that we will see for the rest of 2026 and in 2027 were announced. Among these was one of the most anticipated games by fans of Japanese role-playing, and although it was known to be in development, it was not officially known yet. And now, at last, Persona 6 has been announced.

Announced almost 10 years after the release of its previous installment, Persona 5, the game has been announced with a brief teaser that has only provided us with a logo, the color of the installment (green), and the consoles it will be released on: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Additionally, it will be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch. Apart from this, no new information about the game has been directly provided, which remains shrouded in complete mystery.

A game with more details than it seems

Except for the fact that the Xbox Store page for Persona 6 offers some new details about the game. In addition to the classic aspects of the Persona saga, such as the returning social links and the school setting, the game will feature “strange rumors, unsettling urban legends, and hidden incidents that only you and your closest allies can face.” This seems to bring it closer to the style of Persona 2: Innocent Sin, rather than the last two installments of the franchise.

Although there is no release date, the game has already been announced. But Atlus will still have to release its next game, also featured at this event: Persona 4 Revival, scheduled for February 18, 2027. So, at least, it seems that we will still have to wait until well into 2027 to see a new Persona.

The most important announcements of the Summer Game Fest 2026

Tonight has been the Summer Game Fest, one of the largest video game events in the world. Replacing E3, it serves as a great gala where some of the biggest announcements in the video game industry are presented. This year has been no exception, and there have been some outstanding titles ranging from imminent releases to some that, even without a date, already make us dream of what is to come.

A Overwhelming Start

The beginning could not have been more spectacular. With a trailer set in France that has remained mysterious for a long time, Capcom has shown the first trailer for the remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica. With a generic date set for 2027 and confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2, it is confirmed that we will continue with annual Resident Evil releases.

The following two new announcements have been no less significant. On one hand, we have the new release from Studio MDHR, the creators of Cuphead. Announcing an 8-bit platforming adventure in the style of classics like Contra in beautiful pixel art for current consoles and PC, as well as for physical format for Master System, named Mighty Cuphead Adventure, they have also announced Cuphead 2.

At the same time, Fumito Ueda, the visionary creator of games like Shadow of the Colossus and ICO, has shown a new trailer for his upcoming game, which we already know the name of, genATLAS, and it has a surprising novelty: it will have shooter phases. Although in the case of none of these games have we received a date, not even a tentative one.

A slower half of the event

From here on, the event’s action has noticeably slowed down. With fewer major announcements and more already known games that aren’t receiving significant updates, it hasn’t maintained the momentum of these first few minutes. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been major news. For example, the announcement of the open beta for Mortal Shell 2, the sequel to a popular and very unique soulslike with a dark and metal tone, now available on Steam.

Another major announcement has been that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, the game adaptation of the comic of the same name, is not dead. In fact, Platinum Games, the legendary studio behind games like Bayonetta, Vanquish, or, more recently in collaboration with Team Ninja, Ninja Gaiden 4, is developing it. Being an AAA action game, they haven’t provided more details or even a full trailer, but the name Platinum Games will excite many people.

One of the most surprising announcements of the night has been Guild Wars 3. Presented with an artistic embroidered trailer, the dean MMO created by veterans of Warcraft and which has been the alternative to World of Warcraft for years has announced its third installment with a beta for fall 2027.

Although it is undeniable that two of the games that will attract the most attention have a very familiar name: Star Wars. On one hand, Star Wars: Galactic Racer is an illegal pod racing and vehicle game that promises adrenaline-fueled races in pure arcade style from the creators of the old Burnout, and it will be released on October 6. On the other hand, Star Wars Zero Company will take the style of tactical strategy games like X-Com and bring it to the Star Wars universe in a game that will arrive on August 24

The main dish of the night

But let’s not pretend that the big announcements of the night didn’t come at the end. The first was an expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds. Named Ascendance, Capcom has described it as massive and we only know three things: it releases in 2027, it seems to take place in what looks like a land in the skies, and the shadow of what appears to be a Lao-Shan Lung appears. This will delight the fans.

In addition, the creators of Stellar Blade have showcased their upcoming game set in the most famous creation universe. Although still in its early stages of development, they have shown a cinematic and some small playable scenes with a spectacular visual aspect that will delight fans of SHIFT UP games and will make them eagerly await this future Stellar Blade Blood Rain. However, they will have to wait patiently, as there is not even an approximate release date yet.

Although the grand final closure has been the third part of the remake of Final Fantasy VII, named Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Promising an even larger open world, allowing exploration with an airship and the ability to parachute at any time, in addition to the inclusion of Cid and Vincent as playable characters, it already has a release date: spring 2027. With another advantage: it will be released on all consoles at the same time. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.

With that, a Summer Game Fest full of announcements has come to an end and, although it had its ups and downs, it has been quite interesting. And although we have left some things unsaid, it had something for everyone. Proving that, when he wants to, Geoff Keighley still knows how to put on an event.

Sony presents the new God of War at the State of Play

Sony closed last night’s State of Play with 20 minutes of gameplay from its next big game: God of War Laufey, a new installment in the God of War franchise. Sony presents the new God of War at the State of Play

Sony closed its State of Play last night with 20 minutes of gameplay from its next big game: God of War Laufey, a new installment in the God of War franchise. Following the story of the last two God of War games, this time we will not embody Kratos, but his wife and mother of his son Atreus, Laufey, better known by her alias, Faye.

The game begins with the death of Laufey, and that is where its greatest peculiarity lies. This time the game is not set in a particular mythology, but Laufey is trapped in the Afterlife of the gods with all kinds of mythological beings. In order to escape from there, she will have to flee with the help of what seems to be a magical sword with powers to kill gods and a talking gelatinous cube.

A God of War with a different protagonist

While we still don’t know many more details, the twenty minutes of trailer have allowed us to understand the foundation of the game. Following the hack’n’slash gameplay style of God of War, but with aerial combat and an emphasis on parries, it seems that it will be a game very much indebted to previous installments of the franchise. This means there is absolutely nothing to fear for fans of the franchise who are looking forward to a new installment of God of War, even if Kratos is not the protagonist.

Having already seen gods from Mongolian mythology and hints of Arthurian myths, there are still many details to unveil. Such as its release date, as we do not know a release date even approximately. The only certainty is that it will be released for PlayStation 5 in the future, and everything points to it delighting fans of God of War.

Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty Warzone will stop functioning on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with the release of the next game in the franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The exact moment of this shutdown will be when the first season begins and the first season pass of the new game is activated, which is set to release on October 23 of this year.

A game that disappears from the last generation

In any case, if you want to play Call of Duty Warzone on previous generation consoles before their servers shut down, you will have to hurry. The game will be removed from the digital stores of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One next Friday, June 4, at which point in-game purchases will also be disabled. Ensuring that no new acquisitions of the game can be made.

This does not mean that all game servers will shut down. If you play on PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S, this popular battle royale based on Call of Duty will continue to function normally and the shutdown will not affect you at all. Except for the obvious reason that there will now be fewer players in the lobbies. This shouldn’t be a problem, as Call of Duty Warzone is a game that has not had issues with its player count so far.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the new installment of Call of Duty, has been presented with less fanfare than previous installments of the franchise, perhaps due to the poor results of the last installment of the franchise. The game will be released on October 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

Activision has announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The new installment of the popular Activision franchise has been primarily developed by Infinity Ward, with assistance from other internal studios, and will be released on October 23, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.

A game that wants to revive the franchise

But these are not the only details we know about this release. With three major game modes, it will be divided into campaign mode, multiplayer mode, and the innovative DMZ mode. In the single-player campaign, we will be taken to South Korea, which will be invaded by North Korea, and we must prevent it by following three intertwined narratives: that of a platoon of American and South Korean soldiers, that of Captain Price carrying out missions around the world, and that of a member of the North Korean dictatorship.

In the case of multiplayer, it is what we have always known, but with an important change in its gameplay. By now adding Apex Attachments, both the behavior of bullets and weapons have been significantly altered to make them more realistic.

Lastly, the DMZ mode is the most particular inclusion. Basically an extraction shooter mode in the style of Arc Raiders or Marathon, but within Call of Duty. You can play both solo and in groups, and the biggest addition of this extraction shooter mode is the dynamic weather and a dynamic objectives system that promises to make each mission completely different from the previous one.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 was a small failure for the franchise, with a terrible critical reception and extremely slow sales among the public, who hope to reverse this with these radical changes to the formula. Whether they will succeed remains to be seen, but Activision Blizzard seems willing to give it a try. And it seems they are not going to go quietly, especially with their first movie on the way.

Marathon will be free-to-play for a limited time after the closure of Destiny 2

Marathon is in a peculiar situation. It is not a failure, but it is also not a great success, with a tremendously loyal audience that loves the game. This has led to Sony reevaluating the value of the acquisition of Bungie, the developer studio of both games, considering they have lost 765 million dollars in the process, especially after the failure of Destiny 2. They want to address this by trying to give Marathon a boost with a free week of gameplay. A free week coinciding with its second season. Marathon is in a peculiar situation. It is not a failure, but it is also not a great success, with a tremendously loyal audience that loves the game. This has led to a reevaluation of the value of acquiring Bungie, the developer studio of both games, at Sony, considering they have lost 765 million dollars in the process. Something they want to address by trying to give Marathon a boost with a week of free play.

A free week coinciding with its second season

From June 2 to 9, you will be able to play Marathon completely free on both PC and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This will coincide with the launch of Season 2 of the game, titled NIGHTFALL, in which the game maps will take a dark turn towards the survival horror genre. Something that was already present in the first season, but will be reinforced in this second one.

All of this will be accompanied by certain systems and modes designed for new players. The first of these will be the Cradle progression system, with which we will be able to customize the attributes of our Hunter. The other includes two PvE modes, which will free the game from any kind of combat against players, removing the tension of potentially losing everything we have achieved at any moment, with the hope of attracting a larger audience that may be intimidated by the harshness of the game’s basic premise.

The idea at Bungie is to continue refining the experience of Marathon. For the third season, they want to ensure that the experience for new players is the best possible, and for the fourth, to add depth to the extraction system and its consequences. It seems that, although Marathon is not performing as expected at Sony, we still have a lot of gameplay ahead.

Square Enix has held a special stream to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the beloved JRPG franchise Dragon Quest. In it, Yosuke Saito, the game’s producer, Yuji Horii, the creator of the saga, presented the new installment of the franchise: Dragon Quest XII. With a particularity. They announced that they had to reboot the project and that it will now be called Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams.

A project full of problems

Dragon Quest XII was technically already announced. Five years ago it was presented under the name Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate with a, literally, flaming logo, and no further information. Now, due to a series of problems that have led them to restart the project, it returns in this new incarnation.

Although the information we have is still very scarce, we have been left with a small conceptual teaser trailer of the game that shows us the protagonists. Including the designs by Akira Toriyama, who passed away in 2024, and whose last works created during his lifetime had technically already been shown, both for video games and for manga. Horii has stated that he will clarify how this is possible in the future, emphasizing that the music is by Koichi Sugiyama, the composer since the first installment of the saga, who passed away in 2021.

Without a release date or confirmed platforms, it seems we will still have to wait a long time to see the new installment of Dragon Quest. At the same event, they also announced Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, a new installment of the Dragon Quest subfranchise —a mix of Dragon Quest and Pokémon—, with nothing more than a logo and stating that it will be coming soon to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

An expansion that will require waiting

Although it seems we won’t have to wait long to know all the details about the expansion. CD Projekt has announced that they will broadcast a special live event on Thursday, May 28 at five in the afternoon, Spanish mainland time. Although they haven’t specifically announced what they will talk about, they have said that the event will feature Kacper Niepokólczycki and Magdalena Zych, and that “we will return once again to the land of knights, vineyards, and vampires.”

There have been many rumors for months about this expansion. It is likely to be a way to link the events of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with those of the upcoming The Witcher 4, according to those same rumors, it seems that CD Projekt wants to start rekindling interest in the witcher among its fans.

Now, if you want to play Songs of the Past you should know that you have to stay up to date. The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will be released in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. So if we were thinking of playing it on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, we’re afraid you’ll have to pay again to be able to play it. Because the world keeps moving forward. Even The Witcher’s.

Sony announces the closure of its biggest failure to date

Sony has officially confirmed that it is shutting down Destruction AllStars, the PlayStation 5 exclusive released in February 2021. Launched as a major bet to encourage online gaming on the platform, the game faced an extremely cold reception, being criticized for its lack of content, the aggressiveness of its microtransactions, and the repetitiveness of its gameplay proposal.

A Game Bound for Disaster

According to information from Sony in an email sent to all users, it is no longer possible to purchase the game or virtual currency within the game since yesterday, May 26, 2026. Stating that “due to ongoing technical issues, the multiplayer services of Destruction AllStars for PlayStation 5 consoles will remain disabled and will no longer be available”, they emphasized that single-player modes will still be available until November 25, 2026, when the servers will close.

Destruction AllStars has always been surrounded by controversy. Announced as a premium game, it was set to be sold for €69.99 at a time when the standard for games was €59.99, leading to significant controversy. So much so that it would eventually be released as a free-to-play with free updates and micropayments for cosmetics and upgrades. This did not help alleviate an almost immediate failure.

Although this is not the only failure of Sony this generation with online games. The other great example is Concord, a game developed by Firewalk Studios that, due to unprecedented low sales, shut down its servers in two weeks. The difference compared to Destruction AllStars is that it was a premium game and not free-to-play, which is why they decided to kill it off sooner: it was giving them bad press. Even if the numbers were, by no means, worse than those of the game from Lucid Games.

There are games that are easy to predict will do well. All the numbers are in their favor, the studio is well-liked, and they are talked about positively on social media. But sometimes that’s not enough. If its development has been bizarre, it has been very expensive, or the studio is in a precarious situation, it is perfectly possible that just being a success is not enough. The most surprising indie of the year is inspired by Zelda, Bloodborne, and features a little mouse as the protagonist

There are games that it’s easy to predict will do well. All the numbers are in their favor, the studio is beloved, and they are talked about positively on social media. But sometimes that’s not enough. If its development has been bizarre, it has been very expensive, or the studio is in a precarious situation, it is perfectly possible that simply being a success is not enough. It may need to break the scales to be considered a triumph. And it could very well be that one of the most anticipated indies of the year, Mina the Hollower, is in that situation.

Some inspirations in the sleeve

Mina the Hollower surprises because it does not hide its inspirations. It doesn’t even try to. It is a game heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda, but specifically by the 2D games of the franchise that came after A Link to the Past, the last game released for Super Nintendo. Embracing what Nintendo did in games like A Link to the Past, Oracle of Seasons, and Oracle of Ages, Mina the Hollower takes them as inspiration to create its own identity.

Because it is true that it draws a lot from them. It has an isometric perspective of 3/4, a pixel art aesthetic similar to that of a Super Nintendo, and a mix of combat, exploration, and puzzles, but it is not exactly like a Zelda. Not only because Mina is a little mouse with a clear purpose: to discover why the spark generators that power the Dark Island are failing. But also because it has another great inspiration: the games from From Software.

Where in Zelda we only have one sword, in Mina The Hollower we have a whole variety of weapons to choose from. Each of them encourages a different playstyle, which is enhanced by a secondary weapon, in the style of Castlevania, with limited uses. This promotes combat in a way much closer to a 2D Bloodborne than to any The Legend of Zelda.

This makes the game have a higher level of difficulty than we would expect in this type of games. Something unexpected from a game that, while set in a pseudo 18th century gothic environment, is inhabited by adorable anthropomorphic animals. But where there are also deadly traps, castles filled with monsters, and of course, poisonous swamps. Just in case the influence of From Software wasn’t clear.

A study that has given it all

Additionally, Mina has to achieve something even more important than discovering what is happening on Shadow Island. She has to sell well and quickly. Why? Because the fate of her studio depends on it. Yacht Club Games, the studio behind Mina The Hollower, has stated that they are on the brink of bankruptcy and, if the game is not an immediate success, they may have to close their doors.

Now, this doesn’t seem to be a problem. Yacht Club Games are the creators of Shovel Knight, a game released in 2014 that delighted fans of retro platformers in the style of the NES. With exquisite pixel art and a devilish difficulty, it has created an entire franchise around it adored by an enthusiastic audience. The reason? The quality of their games and the care dedicated to them, establishing Yacht Club Games as a hallmark of quality.

Moreover, this is reflected in the numbers. Mina the Hollower is currently the sixth most wished game on Steam. This means that, even in the most conservative forecasts, it should reach six figures in its first twenty-four hours without any issues. If marketing and enthusiasm are on point, it could reach seven. But that remains to be seen.

Will Mina the Hollower be the next big indie hit? Everything points to yes. It is a beautiful game that is causing a sensation on social media and comes from a studio known for delivering excellent results. Whether that will be enough remains to be seen, given its situation. But we won’t have to wait long: Mina the Hollower will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S on May 29. And barring a major catastrophe, we could very well be looking at one of the games of the year.
