For years, our iPhone or iPad apps have had to ask for permission to track our movements beyond the app itself. Shortly after the implementation of this measure, Google adjusted its tracking methods to comply with this regulation and avoid having to ask for permission for such tracking. Now YouTube is changing course and will start asking us to allow for greater tracking and tracing to receive even more personalized ads.
Is more tracking a good idea?
Soon – as Google has not provided details on when this tracking request will arrive – if we use the YouTube app on an iPhone or iPad, we will see a message asking us if we want to allow YouTube to track our activity on other apps and websites. A notice will offer us two options: “Allow” and “Ask the app not to track.” If we choose the first option, our activity on YouTube will be linked to that of third-party apps and websites to display personalized ads and measure the performance of these ads.
YouTube, while trying to prevent us from subscribing to Premium through a VPN and launching its own “Community Notes” to combat misinformation, ensures that this option will provide a high-quality advertising experience. Furthermore, it argues that allowing advertisers to better measure the performance of their ads will benefit content creators on the platform. However, arguments against such tracking and in favor of privacy are also present.
As reported on 9to5google, this notice will not appear for YouTube Premium subscribers or child accounts. After choosing one option or the other, we can always change the decision from the Settings > Privacy and Security > Tracking app. Here, it should be noted that we can also disable the permission request, which prevents apps from even requesting to track us.
