Most important Windows apps of 2007

Most important Windows apps in 2007With just a few days left to end 2007, it’s time to take a look back on the past twelve months and see how software has evolved all along this year, especially for us Windows users. There have been key software releases and improvements for the Windows platform during this year, starting with a new operating system and ending with a new version of Firefox that’s about to be announced.

This is why I’ve decided to follow Cyril’s idea and create a list with the ten most important Windows apps in 2007. Should you think we’ve missed any, feel free to add your own.

I know I’m cheating a bit here but despite having listed already ten apps, I couldn’t finish this 2007 roundup without including World of Warcraft. After all, this list is based only on personal criteria and WoW still remains my favorite game.

How to download new MUGEN characters

I’m a big fan of using MUGEN to develop computer games based on old classics. However, one of the most tedious aspects of this intricate development platform lies in the creation of characters. Thankfully though, there are several online resources where you can download MUGEN sprites for free. Finding these sites can be difficult, but I’ll outline some of the best that I’ve come across.

Mugenation is a MUGEN developer community which a large database of different characters, which you can access by clicking the ‘Chars’ link on the homepage. You’ll find the stars of everything from Streetfighter to Worms here. Many of the character files are hosted by Mugenation which you can download for free. Some characters though are only available by clicking the link to an external site, and you’ll find that many of these are in Japanese or Korean.

Another decent community site is Heroes of Gaming, and you can access a few free characters from here. GCN‘s collection of characters is more impressive (unfortunately no longer available), featuring a huge range of Nintendo legends, such as Mario, Mega Man and Ryu. The site also offers template characters to help you build your own in MUGEN. Still not enough for you? Then head for eSnips, where you’ll find a feast of character downloads.

Most memorable Mac apps of 2007

apple-logo.jpgWith 2007 almost over, now is the perfect time to reflect on the year that went through and talk about the software that stood out the most. It’s been a very good year for Mac, and the release of Leopard has really pushed developers to build exciting new versions of their software with sleeker designs and new technological advances. New innovative software have emerged and many older applications have gone through significant face lifts.

To celebrate the moment, I’ve put together a list of the 10 Mac applications that made the most impact this year. This is only my personal opinion though, so don’t hesitate to shout out if you think I’ve missed out a Mac application that deserves to be in the list.

  • Coda – Because of its beautiful design and how it manages to integrate all the tools you need to develop web pages.
  • Picturesque – This little app is a pleasure to use: drag and drop your image, set your effect, and you’re done!
  • Delicious Library – Create beautiful digital shelves of all your CDs, books and DVDs.
  • Omnifocus – One of the most hyped about Mac apps of the year, Omnifocus offers the GTD approach to tasks in a nifty interface.
  • CSSEdit – Because it looks great, loads sites really quickly and makes editing CSS accessible to anyone.
  • Joost – The online TV revolution is here thanks to Joost, which gives you access to hundreds of quality programs from your desktop.
  • World of Warcraft – Because WoW is truly a phenomenon. The release of the new Burning Crusade expansion pack back in January was one of the biggest gaming events of the year.
  • Flock – The social browser reached 1.0 this year offering up smooth integration to services like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr or YouTube.
  • iWork – Mac users can now claim a solid office suite with three great applications: Numbers, Pages and Keynote.
  • Pixelmator – An intuitive imaging application with loads of editing tools and layer support, Pixelmator comes in a sleek dark grey multi-windowed interface.

How to dual boot in Linux on Windows XP: Part 2

Partition logo.jpgIn Part One I looked at some very good reasons to install Linux on your system. In this second part, I’m going to look at some of the practicalities involved in getting started, which mainly involves the creation of a partition on your hard drive.

The first and most important thing you’ll need is space on your hard drive. We’re not talking much space but I would recommend around 10GB with which to make a partition on your drive to be safe. You could easily get away with 2GB or even 5GB but 10GB gives you the freedom to download all that tasty free software to your heart’s content. If you’re not familiar with creating partitions however, then here’s a few tips.

A partition is basically exactly what it says – it divides your hard disk into different slices so that you can install two or more operating systems on it instead of having to be uniquely devoted to Windows. Windows has it’s own partition tool in System Tools but I don’t recommend it. There are several third party programs that will do the job for you quicker, more user friendly and with less fuss. However, before you do any of this BACKUP your data. Creating a partition can occasionally lead to instability or read errors afterwards and there’s no way to recover damaged data. Another important tip is to defrag your hard drive before creating the partition – you’ll find that this enables the partition software to create the partition quickly and less prone to errors.

As regards partition software, I’d recommend Norton Partition Magic although it’s not free and doesn’t come cheap. However, a good free alternative is Partition Logic which doesn’t have all the flashy graphics or tools that come with Norton but does the job well. Alternatively, Cute Partition also offers a free service with more advanced options.

OK, so sit back and have a cup of tea whilst the partition process takes place. In the next section, we’ll look at installing Linux.
