PewDiePie: Legend of the Brofist, and more retro fun: 3 game reviews in 3 minutes

This week on Click-Swipe-Play I check out three fantastic retro-styled games: Shooty Skies, The Escapist: The Walking Dead, and PewDiePie: Legend of the Brofist.

I kick things off with The Escapist: The Walking Dead (Windows), a game that blends The Escapist’s top-down, prison break themed action with the zombie infested Walking Dead. During your adventure you meet characters from the comic and TV show who you can use to build a squad of survivors to help you survive the apocalypse.

The YouTube phenom PewDiePie’s game is next – PewDiePie: Legend of the Brofist (iOS|Android). Lifting inspiration from classic 16-bit games like Megaman or Mario, this is actually a really fun platformer – a pleasant surprise for anyone who was expecting a quick cash-in.

This week’s final minute is dedicated to Shooty Skies (iOS), the latest title from the minds that bought you Cross Road. This top-down shooter retains the same humor, bold colors, and blocky art of the duo’s previous game. Add to this its responsive controls, and you have a game that’s hard to put down.

WhatsApp prepares to fight, Android vulnerabilities, Facebook profile update, and more news

On the Softonic Roundup this week we look at the brewing battle between WhatsApp and mobile carriers, see the latest Android variability, peak at the Windows 10 update leak, prepare ourselves for Facebook profiles, and get excited for Minecraft: Story Mode.

Kicking it off, Android phones are in danger from Stagefright 2.0, a vulnerability that exploits metadata tags on MP3 and MP4 files. Impacting 95% of phones, manufacturers are already looking at fixes to this issue.  Until then be careful with those multimedia downloads. (Source: Zimperium)

Facebook’s next update is coming, and it will include the option to set animated GIFs as your profile image. This, and numerous other profile updates, are being enjoyed now by iPhone Facebook app users in the UK and California – hopefully it will go on general release soon. (Sources: FB.com, Softonic)

Microsoft have an event on October 6, which we will check in on next week. Until then, we will have to make do with a leak of the next build of Windows 10 and the new features it will bring. (Source: Windows Central)

Minecraft: Story Mode’s trailer hit last week. Coming from Telltale Games, Minecraft Story Mode will borrow heavily from the studio’s previous narrative focused titles – like The Walking Dead – to add moral choices to Minecraft experience. Finally, WhatsApp have sent a few sentences for translation. It seems harmless enough until you see one of the sentences, “Your mobile operator does not support calls through WhatsApp. Try changing mobile operator or connect to Wi-Fi”. (Source: Aggiornamenti Lumia)

AVG Protection and Need For Speed No Limit, just two of this week’s best apps

We are back with five of the week’s best, most interesting, and just downright oddest apps.

This week we start with AVG Protection (Windows), the latest installment of the famous antivirus. Security has never been more important and in response to this AVG’s latest update has never been more complete, providing an all-in-one solution for every one of your machines and devices.

Next we have AmpME (iOS|Android), the app that lets you synchronize music across all of your near-by friends’ phones. This lets you use every device in the house to crank up the volume, or quickly create a private disco.

Third is Adidas Snapshot (iOS|Android), an app for soccer players that lets you record a kick and then see the speed and angle of the ball. Add some after-effects and your shots are ready for sharing.

Need for Speed: No Limits (iOS|Android) is our fourth app, the latest mobile installment of this beloved street-racing franchise. This free-to-play game has plenty of social hooks and simplified controls to make it a great fit for touchscreen.

Finally… well we don’t have a finally this week because we are about to start reserving this spot for user recommendations. Facebook is about to push out the biggest update of the year

Do you feel that your Facebook profile picture looks a bit dull? A solution to this (and several other upgrades) is coming soon with the new Facebook update, designed especially for mobile users of Facebook (on Android, iOS, or Windows Phone). Today, we talk about all the new updates that await you.

Your profile picture comes to life

The most talked about feature is undoubtedly “Profile Videos”. Facebook says that you will be able to upload a short video, or record one using your smartphone’s camera, and turn it into an animated GIF profile picture. We think that this will help Facebook users to better showcase their personalities, so goodbye boring photos!

A photo for every occasion

How many times have you had a profile picture of yourself in a Santa hat on your Facebook page until mid-February? Perhaps you were too lazy to change it, or you just forgot about it completely. Facebook now has a solution to prevent that from ever happening again.

Introducing…. temporary profile pictures! Not the greatest name for a feature but, until they come up with something else, it will have to do. With temporary profile pictures, you get to set profile pictures that expire after a certain amount of time. For example, your Santa hat photo could be set to appear from December 20th to January 5th. Outside of those days, your regular profile picture will be displayed.

Scheduling profile pictures could also be useful for many other occasions. For example, to show that you are on vacation and do not wish to be disturbed, or switching your regular photo to one of you and your best friend when it’s his birthday – definitely a pleasant surprise, and more special than a dry and distant greeting on a wall.

And finally, the “dislike” button

In addition, the next Facebook update will make it easier for you to edit your profile on mobile platforms.

“Well, okay, yes, this is all great,” you must be thinking, “But what about the rumored dislike button?” Well so far, Facebook has not officially commented, but if you are reading this, Mr. Zuckerberg, we would really dislike it if we don’t get one…

PES 2016 gives FIFA 16 a good kicking in our comparison

This week on Click-Swipe-Play, we have the clash of giants as we pit the two most popular games of the world’s most popular sport against each other. The sport is, of course, soccer (sorry, football), and the games are Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 and FIFA 16.

These two games have been in a back and forth for many years, but FIFA has held the crown both critically and with fans recently. And this year’s entry is certainly another strong offering with a new FIFA Ultimate Team mode (FUT Draft), improved Magic Moments that recreate the majesty of the sport, and (most notably) the inclusion of 12 female international teams. Add in some gameplay tweaks in response to fan feedback, and you have a very complete update this year.

But the question is if Konami’s PES 2016 can tip the balance. Well, while it may not have as many back-of-box bullets points, those it does have are important ones. Most notable are the game’s new physics and AI. These are two core systems and by overhauling them Konami has revitalized the on the ball action and created better squad dynamics. This comes in combination with a host of other improvements – including more licenses so you can play as the teams you love – to make this a great year for Pro Evo fans.

Because of all this we think that PES is the soccer game for 2016 – but watch the video to find out all the reasons why.
