Why Facebook is losing teens

It’s been shown again and again that digital services age in dog years. There was a time when having a MySpace profile was edgy and cool, with its Top 10 Friends feature and music-based model. However, the arrival of Facebook, with its simple interface and lack of ads, toppled MySpace completely. Falling as quickly as it rose, MySpace went the way of the telegram; an archaic means of communication mentioned only as the butt of the joke. Facebook laughed, and it’s been laughing for years. But with the coming of newer, hipper rivals like Instagram* and Snapchat, Facebook isn’t laughing anymore.

Facebook: Boomer Central?

A commonly cited reason for leaving Facebook among teenagers is the influx of parents and older people to the website. Facebook is still the most popular social media platform by far amongst people outside the 12-17 year old demographic. When you’re a teenager, there is nothing less cool in the world than your parents. Why on earth would you want to share a social media platform with them? There’s no quicker way to have your hot new pic seen as uncool than to have your mom comment “CUTE! That’s my baby!! Love, Mom” underneath.

The presence of relatives on Facebook has deterred teenagers from acting like themselves while posting, wary that whatever they say will be brought up at the dinner table. Teenagers have to moderate what they post so much that Facebook might as well be LinkedIn.

For today’s teenagers, their presence on social media is crucial for their social status. They don’t want to present themselves as some sort of sanitized, grandma-friendly figure. They’re teenagers; they want to seem rebellious, unique, and aloof. The demographics of Facebook do not allow them to do that.

Snap Today, Gone Tomorrow

Snapchat has stolen Facebook’s teenage users away, and they show no signs of turning back. The main appeal of Snapchat to teenagers is its impulsivity and lack of permanence. The Snap Stories feature, which allows users to upload videos or photos that last for 24 hours before being deleted, is incredibly popular among teenagers because users are encouraged to post more spur of the moment content, as opposed to Facebook’s timeline model encouraging the posting of more “significant” content. People aren’t going to post that shaky three-second clip they took of that cute dog on Facebook, but it would be perfectly normal to see it on a Snap Story.

By encouraging off the cuff, mundane content, Snapchat constantly stays in the back of its user’s heads. Facebook recognizes this design philosophy and has copied it wholesale with its “Moments” feature. Facebook’s core design is that of a timeline, displaying significant events or content chronologically on a user’s profile.

Snapchat is the exact opposite, being a social media platform that focuses on content that’s in the moment. For teenagers, who constantly ebb and flow between what they see as cool, having your embarrassing or uncool posts erase themselves only to be replaced by cooler and newer content is highly appealing.

Facebook in the Future

Snapchat currently stands as the most popular social media platform among people 12-17 years old. Reports from eMarketer suggest that Snapchat will gain 1.2 million new users in that demographic by 2022, while at the same time Facebook will lose 2.2 million teenage users. Because Facebook is still the most popular social media platform outside this demographic, they may double down and cater to their older user base. While this may alienate their younger users even further, it seems that Facebook is now past its trendy, younger days.

* Yes, Facebook owns Instagram. But the migration from the lucrative Facebook platform is a problem for the company.

Why you should be playing Unavowed

Point-and-click graphic adventure games aren’t exactly common nowadays with battle royale games like Fortnite, and PUBG taking the spotlight. Despite this, over the last decade, indie developer Wadjet Eye Games has created some of the best story-heavy games in this format. First was The Shivah, then the Blackwell series, and now Unavowed, which takes place in the Blackwell universe.

Why you should be playing Unavowed

The artwork is nostalgic and familiar

Wadjet Eye Games has continued to use the same retro graphics for the majority of its titles, and Unavowed is no different. But that doesn’t mean those graphics haven’t improved over time. If you look at Unavowed compared to The Shivah, you will see incredibly different games. Unavowed has successfully found a way to keep their retro graphics but continue to make them feel impressive and new.

Unavowed

The gameplay is simple but engaging

Many point-and-click adventure games can seem lackluster in terms of gameplay from an outside perspective. However, Unvowed really breaks this expectation by building its core gameplay around choice. I

nstead of playing like a normal point-and-click adventure game that primarily focuses on solving puzzles (which this game does have), the main gameplay hook is your choices. Every choice you make affects something, whether it be the story or achievements. Even the simple choice of playing a male or female can change the narrative in unexpected ways.

The narrative is amazing

The story itself is what’s truly captivating about this game. You choose to play as either a cop, bartender, or an actor who has recently been possessed by a demon. You then deal with the aftermath of what you’ve done, and what you can do to help those who’ve been affected. The game takes a new approach to ancient supernatural concepts in today’s world. Fans of the Blackwell series will be particularly excited by the many homages to it. The game itself takes place five years after the events of Blackwell Epiphany, and a lot has changed! If you were curious to learn more about the Blackwell world, then this game is the perfect opportunity for you to do that.

Steam.tv is Valve’s answer to Twitch

The internet has been buzzing after Valve registered the domain name Steam.tv, causing speculation that the company was entering the game streaming industry against Twitch and YouTube Gaming.

Later the same day the domain was registered, Steam.tv actually went live, broadcasting the Dota 2 mega-tournament The International. The annual event is one of the most-watched eSports events of the year. Valve quickly pulled Steam.tv offline that same day, saying that the website going offline was an error that resulted from an internal test. However, as of now, Steam.tv has officially gone live.

Steam.tv

Steam.tv’s unique edge over Twitch is its full Steam integration. When you log in to your Steam account, your friends list will appear on the left side, appearing very similar to Steam’s usual “Friends and Chat” window. From this window, you can message your friends, see what they’re playing, or otherwise interact with them just as you would on Steam. You can also seamlessly hop into a live broadcast of your friend’s gameplay, allowing you to interact with and harass your friends in real-time (this feature can be turned off if you don’t feel like broadcasting your gaming session to the world).

Additionally, you can invite friends to watch broadcasts together. You can chat using the built-in voice chat client (as long as you’re using Google Chrome; browser voice chat is coming to other browsers later).

The website so far seems to be a cool way to tie Steam’s social features with a broadcasting site. While it remains to be seen if Steam.tv will become a serious competitor to Twitch, it looks promising so far.

8 things you didn’t know about Jim Henson’s Labyrinth

Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth” is a beloved cult classic. But here are some things you may not know about it.

The 1986 musical fantasy film “Labyrinth” has become somewhat of a cult classic since its original release. Over three decades have passed since this film first hit the screen, and it’s still being watched and talked about today. Despite this, there are some unique things about the movie you might not know.

8 things you didn’t know about Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth”

1. The movie is based off a book by the author of “Where The Wild Things Are”

The inspiration for “Labyrinth” came from Maurice Sendak’s “Outside Over There,” which is a children’s book that follows the story of a young girl named Ida looking for her little sister through a world of goblins that have taken her away. Sendak’s “Where The Wild Things Are” can actually be seen at the beginning of the movie in Sarah’s room.

Labyrinth Sarah2. Toby’s name was originally Freddie

The original script for the movie had the baby, Toby, named Freddie instead. This was later changed because the child actor, Toby Froud, wouldn’t respond to another name.

Labyrinth Toby3. David Bowie released two promotional music videos for this movie

Both videos were directed by Steve Barron, and featured songs from the movie’s soundtrack (which was later released as a full David Bowie album). The first was “Underground” which the movie uses for its closing credits. The second was “As The World Falls Down”, which was featured during the ballroom scene.

4. Two video games were released following this film.

One English-language video game, titled (obviously) “Labyrinth,” was released. It would be the first adventure game ever directed by Lucasfilm Games (which would later be renamed “LucasArts”). Along with this, Nintendo released a Japanese “Labyrinth” game for the Famicom. These games are entirely different, though both feature the same setting as the original movie. The English game featured a text-based adventure system and had the protagonist trapped in the Labyrinth by Jareth, while the Japanese game was an action adventure game that more closely resembled the original movie by having the protagonist search for Toby.

Labyrinth video game5. There is a manga sequel to the movie.

Two decades after the movie’s release, a sequel manga-style comic was released in English called “Return to Labyrinth”. This sequel takes place 13 years after the original movie (a reference to the 13-hour time limit that Sarah had), and features a teenage Toby as the protagonist, with Jareth trying once again to take him as his heir. it features many of the characters from the original film as well.

Labyrinth baby6. “Labyrinth” features the first CGI animal in a feature film

The barn owl at the beginning of the movie is a photo-realistic CGI animal, the first ever to be attempted on the big screen.

7. Jareth’s crystal ball juggling was done by Michael Moschen

Instead of using special effects to make the balls juggling, Michael Moschen stood behind David Bowie and replaces Bowie’s arms with his own. This also means that all the juggling was done without Moschen even able to see the balls themselves!

Labyrinth8. This was Jim Henson’s final film

While he later worked on “The Witches,” Henson died before its release, making Labyrinth his final feature film to be released while he was still alive.

Best Discord Bots

With so many different types of Discord bots, it can be difficult to find the perfect one for your channel. Here are some of the best.

Discord has become the meeting ground for gamers all over the web. No matter what game you play, there is a Discord community out there for it. With how often gamers are using this program, it’s no wonder that Discord bots have become increasingly popular.

Private servers can use bots for games to play with friends, while public servers might use them to help moderate their large numbers. Either type can also take full advantage of having a music bot to use so gamers have something to listen to while they play. With so many different types of bots, it can be difficult to find the perfect one for your channel. Here are some of the best, and a little description on when you should be adding them to your channel or not:

Music Bots

Every discord server can use a Music Bot. In fact, Music Bots are so popular, that the Discord bots page has its own section just for them. While there is many to choose from, two that are of particular note are ErisBot and Pancake.

ErisBot is simple an easy to use. The program functions as a basic music player, with many features similar to an iPod. You can even toggle it to play on its own. Additionally, it has some fun images to send you, and an urban dictionary search built in.

Erisbot

Pancake is a little different as it actually serves a few functions. It works as a music bot in a similar way to ErisBot, though with fewer options. However, it also has some images, games, and moderation capability as well. It does a little bit of everything, and is a great tool to use if you want to have a bot for each of those things, but aren’t looking to get many different ones.

Moderator Bots

Aside from Pancake, there are many bots whose primary job is to moderate your chat. Auto-moderation can be very helpful when managing a public Discord, especially if you want to keep the language and content clean.

Similar to Pancake, Dyno is a multipurpose bot. Like Pancake, it can play music, but its primary role is moderation. Unlike most bots, this one has customization auto-moderation and welcome messages, so it can manage an entire Discord without the need of moderators to be in the chat at all times.

While Dyno is a multipurpose bot, Auttaja is almost exclusively used for moderating. That being said, the customization potential of Auttaja is immense. Not only can the bot auto-moderate chat, but it can also moderate systematic processes such as nicknames and punishments.

Game/Fun Bots

Some of the most popular bots are interactive game-based ones or fun and goofy bots. Two of these are actually the most popular discord bots right now, being Pokécord and Dank Memer.

Pokécord is a cute and interactive game that basically creates a text-based Pokémon adventure for your Discord. It’s a fun and easy way to get your Discord members involved in a game.

Dank Memer is a goofy bot that is just there to help your Discord have some fun. It allows for meme creation, sharing, and other fun activities. It primarily revolves around joking through popular online images.

If you can’t find a bot that fits for you, make your own!

While there are hundreds of Discord bots each with their own unique customization preferences and a wide range of commands, there may not be one tailored to your specific need. Or maybe you just want to be able to have full customization or more restrictive bot access. Either way, there are a few ways to go about making a bot for yourself, but we’re going to focus on the easiest and most effective way to do so:

The first thing you have to do is log into Discord, go to the applications page, and press “Create an application.”

Discord applications

Then give the application a name (and an avatar if you’d like), and press “Bot” on the left-hand side. From there press “Add Bot.” You should then receive a pop-up asking if you want to continue, say “yes.”

Discord bots

From here you can give your bot specific authorizations. This can be set based on your preferences. Under the bot’s username now there should be a section called “Token.” Underneath it click the link that says “Click to reveal token.” Copy the token code for later.

Discord bots

Then on the left-hand side click “OAuth2.” From here, you want to specify what kind of program you are creating. Press “Bot” and then copy the URL it generates. This should lead you to a page that lets you add the bot to any of the servers you manage. From here you can choose which server you want to add the bot to.

Discord bots

From here you will need some kind of coding program and knowledge to make full use of the bot. In order to activate the bot, you will need a text editor such as NotePad, and a coding tool such as JavaScript. You’ll need to take the Token you got earlier and save it as a NotePad document into a folder for your bot. This document should be titled “auth.json” and should be written as follows:

{

“token”: [your token code that you received earlier]

}

You’ll need to create two more files to run your bot. One should be saved as package.json with the following code:

{

“name”: “greeter-bot”,

“version”: “1.0.0”,

“description”: “[whatever you want the description to be]”,

“main”: “bot.js”,

“author”: “[your discord username]”,

“dependencies”: {}

}

For the final code, you should name the file “bot.js.” Here is where you want to place all your primary functions for the bot. Preferably, you have some knowledge of coding so you can customize the bot in a way that you want. However, there is a simple Discord bot code available online provided by Medium.  So if you’re unfamiliar with JavaScript, then you can use this code for some basic functionality.

var Discord = require(‘discord.io’);
var logger = require(‘winston’);
var auth = require(‘./auth.json’);
// Configure logger settings
logger.remove(logger.transports.Console);
logger.add(logger.transports.Console, {
colorize: true
});
logger.level = ‘debug’;
// Initialize Discord Bot
var bot = new Discord.Client({
token: auth.token,
autorun: true
});
bot.on(‘ready’, function (evt) {
logger.info(‘Connected’);
logger.info(‘Logged in as: ‘);
logger.info(bot.username + ‘ – (‘ + bot.id + ‘)’);
});
bot.on(‘message’, function (user, userID, channelID, message, evt) {
// Our bot needs to know if it will execute a command
// It will listen for messages that will start with `!`
if (message.substring(0, 1) == ‘!’) {
var args = message.substring(1).split(‘ ‘);
var cmd = args[0];

args = args.splice(1);
switch(cmd) {
// !ping
case ‘ping’:
bot.sendMessage({
to: channelID,
message: ‘Pong!’
});
break;
// Just add any case commands if you want to..
}
}
});

Finally, you can run this code by opening JavaScript (or whichever coding program you are using) and typing “npm install discord.io winston –save” – which will install all the programs you need for the bot to function. Then type “node bot.js” whenever you want to run the bot.

Because this process requires some coding knowledge, and there are already hundreds of bots out there, you should consider looking into those before trying to venture into creating your own. It may be tempting to just create your own right away, but there are plenty of bots that can do exactly what you need. Common causes of data loss and what you can do about them

Our digital evolution has happened so quickly that those of us who can remember not owning or having used a computer, now do almost everything on our computers. Today, we use computers, tablets, and smartphones to help with everything from killing a few minutes of boredom, to writing an essay for school, doing online shopping, mobile banking or filing tax returns.

Data is of utmost importance to all individuals & businesses. Any event of data loss can cause stress and discomfort not just to individuals but may result in big time loss to organizations. In order to survive such a crisis situation, you need to follow a proactive approach of protecting data and taking timely backups. But the question is how many of us take backups timely and do these backup work? What happens if the backup fails or is not accessible?

You’ve likely been overrun with GDPR “We’ve updated our Privacy Policy” emails over the last few weeks. The EU is out to protect the data that companies are gathering about you, and is big enough that the whole world has to pay attention. What about your own data though? The stuff you use every day at home and at work? What happens if you lose your data? It can happen, it often does, and what then?

How could you lose your data?

There are a lot of ways we can lose our data, and seriously disrupt our lives. We’ve all deleted something accidentally. Panicked as the recycle bin empties and our important documents disappear into digital oblivion. Another common way for our files to go missing is for our computers to become infected with a virus or an evolved form of malicious code called ransomware. Ransomware sees the data, either deleted from the PC or encrypted.

The fun doesn’t stop there either. Physical damage to a hard drive or sudden power cuts can also see our vital digital data disappearing right before our eyes. Being electronic devices, PCs and mobile phones are prone to water damage, and as they’re easy to transport theft as well. The digital devices that facilitate our modern lives are fragile pieces of kit. We can try to protect them, but sometimes the worst will happen.  We shouldn’t blame ourselves if it does, and we shouldn’t panic. If the worst happens, we can take action to recover our lost data. Here is how:
