Google Messages beta just got a new build, version messages.android_20261002_00_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic, and an APK teardown points to something a lot more playful: in-app games. If that feature makes it out the door, Android could finally have its own answer to iMessage with GamePigeon. The teardown turns up code tied to a feature codenamed “Midnight,” along with strings for Word Scramble, Chess, Cup Pong, Checkers, Pool, Basketball, Four in a Row, Crazy 8s, and Darts. That’s a pretty specific list, and it makes this look like actual development work, not just a stray internal experiment. These are quick, casual games built for multiplayer, or at least they look that way.
What isn’t clear yet is how any of this would show up in the app. The games could live inside a conversation, or they might sit in a separate menu somewhere. They could support real-time matches, turn-based play, or both. There’s also no sign yet of how far Google plans to take compatibility: whether these would work in SMS chats, whether iPhone users could join in, or whether the whole thing would stay limited to people using the full Google Messages setup.
If you use Google Messages all the time, this is one to keep an eye on. It lines up with Google’s recent push to make the app feel more social and a little more lively, with chat themes, a redesigned long-press menu, Google Keep integration, animated emoji reactions, and screen effects all heading in that direction. You can download Google Messages beta for Android right now, but Google still hasn’t announced the feature or given any launch date. And, as always with teardowns, there’s no promise any of these games will ever ship publicly.
