Streaming Industry Shift: Platform Joins Price Increase Bandwagon
At the rate we are going in 2024, we will not be able to pay for more than two streaming platforms, since their added price will cost as much as having six in 2020.
As if we didn’t have enough with Netflix or HBO Max, which have significantly increased their prices in recent years, now the folks at Google have decided that it’s time to raise YouTube subscriptions a bit more.
The price of an individual subscription to YouTube Premium has increased by 2 dollars, reaching 13.99 dollars per month in the United States. YouTube has not officially announced this price hike, but American media outlets have confirmed it simply by visiting the official YouTube website.
A rise that is not announced but that does not stop
At the end of last year, Premium family plans experienced a significant increase to $22.99/month. Fortunately, that rate remains unchanged. The annual subscription, introduced in January 2022, now costs $139.99, representing a $20 increase. Compared to the monthly payment, you save $27.89.
The last time YouTube raised the price of YouTube Premium (formerly known as “Red”) was in 2018 with the relaunch of YouTube Music. However, these are U.S. prices, and we’ll have to wait and see how much it will increase in Spain.
YouTube is also increasing the price of Music Premium to $10.99 per month from $9.99. This is not surprising given Apple and Amazon’s similar moves in the past year. Additionally, YouTube has declared war on ad-blockers.
In the absence of an official announcement, it’s unclear how existing subscribers will be affected or if they will be protected.
As you know, YouTube Premium removes ads (while still supporting creators), allows audio-only playback for videos, and enables downloads for offline access. It also offers a new improved video quality.
