By 2025, fraud has changed shape. Scammers are using synthetic media to pass themselves off as real people, open accounts, and run scams, which puts digital identity on the front line of security for any business handling onboarding, payments, or internal communications.
Spotting phishing emails or suspicious logins isn’t enough anymore. Criminals can generate fake documents, clone a voice from a few seconds of audio, and create video impersonations at scale, which lets them repeat the same scams faster and more cheaply.
The numbers are hard to ignore: impersonation scams rose 148% in 2024, deepfake fraud attempts jumped 2,137% over three years, deepfake fraud surged 700% in Q1 2025, consumer losses hit $12.5 billion in 2024, and generative-fraud losses could reach $40 billion by 2027.
The damage shows up in cases like the Hong Kong finance employee who sent $25 million after a fake video call with senior colleagues. On average, an identity-fraud incident tied to deepfakes costs $450,000.
If you’re responsible for onboarding, payments, or internal communications, stronger identity defenses make sense: 97% of businesses faced advanced automated fraud.
Legacy passwords, one-time checks, and static IDs are easier to get around. Businesses have a better shot with layered protection, including behavioral biometrics, anomaly monitoring, forgery detection, and continuous verification, because automation is now fighting automation and identity matters as much as data.
