Many of us grew up with a Nintendo 64 under the living room television. We experienced wonderful adventures on it, like Super Mario 64 or Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Now, a group of engineers wants us to relive our childhood with a collector’s item that will make your mouth water.
Analogue, the company known for making wonderful modern versions of retro hardware, will now focus on the 64-bit era with Analogue 3D, a reimagining of the Nintendo 64.
In this way, all those nostalgic for the golden age of gaming, the 90s, will be able to enjoy their childhood games again, as if time had never passed, nor were we now balder and had whiter hair.
A next-gen console fully compatible with the 90s
The company claims that the new console will be “100% compatible” with N64 cartridges from all regions and will even support 4K output.
It will also include “original screen modes with high-quality recreations of specific CRT and PVM models” for purists, in addition to Bluetooth compatibility and four controller ports.
Today’s announcement is more than just an announcement with little information. Although we have some details, nothing is known about the price or a specific release date beyond 2024.
Analogue hasn’t even shown the hardware yet: for now, we only have these brief images of what appears to be the console, as well as the 8BitDo wireless controller that will be released alongside it.
Even without many details, the announcement remains exciting. Analogue has a long history of releasing high-quality recreations of consoles like NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis, allowing players to enjoy old cartridges on modern TVs.
More recently, the company has shifted its focus to portable gaming with the sleek Analogue Pocket.
The N64 is particularly interesting because Nintendo’s console is notorious for being difficult to emulate (even Nintendo struggles to do it well).
But Analogue claims that this shouldn’t be a problem, as they use a solution called FPGA (field-programmable gate array) technology, which essentially allows it to function like the original hardware.
