The trailer was unavailable in Italy for over 24 hours, displaying the message that it was blocked in that country due to copyright claims made by La7. Apparently, the channel had used material from the trailer in a segment of its recent program before attempting to claim rights over it.

YouTube’s copyright system is broken

The incident provoked reactions on social media, where multiple users shared their similar experiences, indicating that their own videos had been demonetized or blocked due to unfounded claims. The situation underscores the criticisms of YouTube’s Content ID system, which is often seen as prone to abuse, primarily affecting smaller content creators who can easily lose significant income.

After La7 withdrew the claim, Nvidia’s trailer was restored and is once again available in Italy, marking a temporary resolution of the conflict. This upheaval highlights the issues in the interpretation of copyright by broadcasters and how their decisions can harm small creators on digital platforms like YouTube. Former IGN editor, Destin Legarie, echoed the frustrations of many by highlighting the absurdity of the situation, pointing out the system’s inability to discern legitimate copyright from abusive ones.

In an ironic twist, La7, which could have taken a more careful approach to protecting its content, is now facing criticism for trying to claim the development of technologies that, in reality, do not belong to them.
