When Andy Weir’s novel Project Hail Mary reached the screen in March 2026, it kicked up fresh interest in Weir himself and in the kind of Star Trek-flavored science fiction he writes, especially books like The Martian and Project Hail Mary.
The movie, with Ryan Gosling starring and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directing, has pulled in more than $684 million worldwide against an estimated $200 million budget. It’s also the sort of hit that sends people back to the books, or to Weir for the first time.
And it’s easy to see why. Weir’s work has that classic Star Trek blend of optimism, curiosity, science-first problem solving, and prose that stays clear without feeling flat. Project Hail Mary leans into that more than anything else, with a lone astronaut and an alien partner trying to save both their worlds through cooperation and mutual understanding, not fear.
If you’ve been missing the hopeful side of classic Trek, Weir’s books are an easy recommendation. He’s a lifelong Trek fan, reportedly even pitched a Star Trek TV series to Paramount, and in March 2026 he took shots at a lot of the newer shows while singling out Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks for praise.
