Paramount+ said today that it’s greenlit Laird, a new family drama set in the Scottish Highlands with Kenneth Branagh leading it.
According to the streamer, Branagh will play the Laird of Castle Drummoch, a landowner trying to keep his ancestral estate out of the hands of a wealthy American billionaire. The setup gives off obvious Yellowstone energy: a formidable patriarch, family land under threat, and outside money moving in.
Still, Paramount+ is pitching the show as more than a straight copy. There are family feuds, buried secrets, romance, and a struggle over shifting power in modern Scotland. Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Georgia Lee are writing, and Joe Wright is directing the pilot, which suggests something a little more cinematic than the usual streaming soap.
If you’re into Yellowstone-style battles over legacy and land, this looks like one to watch. Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios, one of the companies behind Yellowstone, are producing it, and that carries some weight as that franchise keeps growing while the original series winds down.
You’ll be able to watch Laird on Paramount+ when it arrives, but Paramount+ still hasn’t announced a release date.
