Season 2 of Netflix’s South Korean horror thriller Gyeongseong Creature is now streaming, pushing the story from 1945 into 2024 and putting the show back in the conversation for its mix of creature-feature horror, romance, suspense, and political commentary.
Season 1 rolled out in two parts, on December 22, 2023, and January 5, 2024. It paired creature-feature terror with Japan’s occupation of Korea as the story followed a secret program of biological experiments on civilians that creates a monster. Viewers and critics also pointed to the show’s clear parallels with Unit 731.
Netflix treated Gyeongseong Creature like a major prestige release, backing it with a reported 70 billion won budget. That bet paid off: the series hit No. 3 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 non-English TV chart in just three days, pulled in 24 million viewing hours, and stayed in the global top 10 for five straight weeks, according to Netflix.
If you like horror that does more than fire off jump scares, this season is still easy to recommend even with the mixed reviews around pacing and some of the characters. Gyeongseong Creature folds together body horror, romance, suspense, and political commentary, and it keeps drawing your attention back to the real horrors of colonial rule and medical experimentation.
