A new Game of Thrones age breakdown is out, this one lining up HBO’s series against George R.R. Martin’s books and showing just how many characters the show aged up by several years.
The series almost never states exact ages on screen, so fans have had to work them out from context. The biggest jumps are Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Robb Stark, Sansa Stark, and Arya Stark. In Martin’s novels, they begin at 13, 14, 14, 11, and 9. On TV, they come off more like 16, 16, 16, 13, and 11. Even Eddard “Ned” Stark and Catelyn Stark shift from their mid-30s in the books to something closer to their early 40s in the show. There was a practical reason for that. Book-accurate ages would’ve made the sex, violence, forced marriages, and deaths even harder to put on screen, and HBO also had a much larger pool of seasoned actors to choose from for roles that demanding.
And it does change the way the story lands.
Robb Stark and Daenerys Targaryen feel easier to accept on screen at 16, while the books, by making them younger, make Westeros feel uglier, harsher, and more tragic. Martin even toyed with a five-year time jump at one point, then scrapped it, partly because it would’ve aged the younger cast naturally.
If you keep up with the franchise, the comparison is a good one to look through, especially since House of the Dragon uses the same kind of adjustment. Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen go from having a nine-year age gap to reading as near-peers, and that same choice also nudges characters like Theon Greyjoy in quieter ways. The full comparison is available online.
