Apple has officially announced that the iconic “Apple ID” will be renamed to “Apple Account.” A change that will be implemented with the releases of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11 and aims to “provide a more consistent login experience across all Apple services and devices, using users’ existing credentials.”
From Apple ID to Apple Account
The change to “Apple Account” is already reflected in the beta versions of these operating systems and various Apple services. However, there are still many places where the branding of “Apple ID” remains, such as on the Apple ID login page on the web, for example. We expect the complete transition to the new name to be finalized when iOS 18 and the other software updates are publicly released, most likely next September.
The name “Apple Account” is undoubtedly more straightforward and better defines the purpose of the account for new users. However, it is also true that for many, the term “Apple ID” is already a reference, as it has been an integral part of the Apple ecosystem for over two decades.
The decision to rename Apple ID to Apple Account reflects the evolution and growth of Apple’s services. Instead of just being a form of identification, the Apple Account has become a hub for a wide range of interconnected services and products.
As we approach the release of these updates, we can expect to see the new branding of “Apple Account” gradually replacing the old “Apple ID” in all points of interaction. A change that, although it may seem minor like the redesign of the flashlight on the iPhone or the ability to change its button on the lock screen, highlights how our Apple Account is now much more than it was a few years ago.
