Apple has added the iPhone X to its obsolete products list, according to the company, which brings official repairs for the phone to an end. Apple-supplied replacement parts are done too.
That follows Apple’s usual policy. Products generally reach obsolete status about seven years after they were last sold, and since iOS 16 was already the iPhone X’s final major software update, this feels more like the formal end of the road than a surprise.
If you still use an iPhone X every day, here’s the part that matters: Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers won’t be doing battery swaps, screen replacements, or other hardware repairs anymore. From this point on, you’re looking at third-party repair shops, refurbished components, or second-hand parts, depending on the shape your device is in.
When it launched in 2017 as Apple’s 10th-anniversary iPhone, the iPhone X changed the look of the lineup. It dropped the Home button, went to an all-screen front with gesture navigation, introduced OLED, Face ID through the TrueDepth camera, and the notch. It also set the design pattern modern iPhones still follow, even if that cutout later turned into the Dynamic Island. And at $999, it was Apple’s most expensive mainstream iPhone at the time, helping make higher-end smartphone prices feel normal.
There’s nothing to download here. But if you’re still carrying an iPhone X, its move to obsolete status brings a few familiar questions back into focus: resale value, e-waste, how long a phone should last, and who gets to repair it. None of that changes what the iPhone X was. Its place as one of Apple’s most important iPhones is already secure.
