Apple has updated its iPhone water-damage advice, and one old standby is now off the list: uncooked rice. Apple says rice doesn’t pull moisture out fast enough, and the dust or starch it sheds can get into the charging port or other openings. When water gets into a phone, timing matters. Powering it on or charging it too soon can lead to short-circuiting and corrosion.
Apple’s guidance is straightforward: turn the iPhone off right away, unplug any cables or accessories, then hold it with the charging port facing down and gently tap it against your hand to help any trapped liquid come out. After that, leave the phone in a dry spot with good airflow for 24 to 48 hours before charging it again.
Don’t use a hairdryer, radiator, oven, or any other heat source. Apple also says not to plug the iPhone in just to see if it still works. If you want to use something external to help with drying, silica gel packets in a sealed container work better than rice and won’t leave debris behind.
If you use your iPhone by the pool, at the beach, or in the rain, keep this in mind. Apple’s full guidance is available online.
