Horsefly Games has revealed The Polar Darkness, a narrative horror game coming to Steam in Q1 2027. It’s shaping up as a grim little town mystery, and people are already reaching for Stephen King and True Detective as reference points.
In The Polar Darkness, you play a journalist looking into the disappearance of a child preacher in Sysiluoma, a fictional village in northern Finland during the 1980s. Horsefly Games says the case is tangled up with a cult, local folklore, and the unbroken darkness of the polar night. Over three days, you’ll question locals, chase leads, solve puzzles, and make choices that change how the story unfolds.
Horsefly Games isn’t building this around action or jump-scare combat. The pitch leans hard into psychological dread, disturbing themes involving children, and no graphic violence. It also has a pretty distinct look, mixing 2D photographic character art with 3D environments, plus Finnish folk music and an investigation-first structure the studio says was partly inspired by Gabriel Knight.
If slow-burn horror is your thing, especially when the pull comes from atmosphere, writing, and an investigation shaped by your decisions, this looks like one to keep an eye on. For now, though, the early buzz is coming from trailers and announcement material, not hands-on previews. Horsefly Games says Steam will be available on Steam when it launches in Q1 2027.
