OpenAI’s ChatGPT is showing up in a new corner of gaming culture: backlog triage. Players are using it to sort unfinished games, figure out what to play next, sketch out play schedules they might actually stick to, and even pair a session with a playlist that fits the mood. If that sounds excessive, consider the pile most people are sitting on. Some estimates put the number of unplayed games at 100 to 150, and one analysis of Steam libraries found that 32.7% of the average collection had never even been launched. Add in constant sales, the monthly drip of Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, and the stream of new releases across console, PC, and handheld, and it’s easy to build a library far faster than you can ever clear it.
So people are handing the mess to ChatGPT. They’ll ask it to sort owned games by length, genre, tone, available free time, or just whether something makes sense for a quiet weekday night versus a whole weekend. That practical use fits neatly with the growth of backlog culture more broadly. Backloggd, the game-tracking platform, reportedly passed 650,000 users by the end of 2025. And if you’re the kind of person who stares at a library screen for 20 minutes, scrolls around, and starts nothing, this is probably one of the more useful ways to try it. Especially because players are far less sold on generative AI inside games themselves: a 2025 survey found that 85% viewed those features negatively, even while assistant-style tools seem to get a warmer reception in a market that industry estimates peg at 3.6 billion players and $188.8 billion.
You can use OpenAI’s ChatGPT on the web or on mobile to put together those shortlists and map out a weekend plan.
