Blizzard confirmed today that Diablo 4 won’t be getting any more paid expansions. That makes Lord of Hatred the game’s last major DLC and effectively wraps up the Story of Hatred arc. From here, Diablo 4 moves forward through quarterly seasons and long-term support, with future seasonal story beats feeding into Diablo 5.
Those seasonal updates are still part of the plan, with new activities, rewards, and story developments arriving every quarter. Blizzard also says it intends to keep supporting Diablo 4 for a long time, as long as players stick with it. The approach sounds closer to Diablo 2: Resurrected than the expansion-heavy model some fans were expecting.
A bigger shift is happening behind the scenes. Blizzard is moving major development resources over to Diablo 5, which is reportedly already penciled in for spring 2029. The next game is set 100 years later, in an apocalyptic version of Sanctuary where Diablo has, for all practical purposes, already won.
That also means Diablo 4’s remaining seasons aren’t just filler. They’re part of the setup. Brent Gibson says player response to each season will help determine which story threads Diablo 5 builds on and which ones get reworked.
And there’s still quite a bit on the slate for Diablo 4 if you’re playing regularly. Blizzard says three seasons are planned for 2025, alongside earnable pets, crossover collaborations, Belial’s return, new Nightmare Dungeon activities, and the Amazon class in the first half of 2027.
Some players will be happy that support is continuing. Others will probably see this as a letdown, especially if they were hoping for more expansion-sized releases. Either way, Blizzard’s direction is pretty clear now: Diablo 4 is the path leading to Diablo 5.
Diablo 4 is available now from Blizzard.
