Quentin Tarantino has made up his mind that he’s only going to make 10 films. He doesn’t even care what we think about it: 10 films, full stop. That’s why he’s turned down making the sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, scrapped the project for The Movie Critic and, now, will premiere his next script onstage. Anything, except cementing his legacy once and for all and putting an end to this suffering.
Tarantino-Style Theater
This first play will be called The Popinjay Cavalier, will star none other than Sacha Baron Cohen himself and will open at London’s Phoenix Theatre on February 23, running until June 13. The play in question sells itself, but the director has already said it’s a “bold comedy” set in Europe in the 1830s. After revolutionizing the United States, Tarantino is now coming to do the same on Europe.
The play will draw inspiration from the epic adventures and sparkling romances of film and theater, including the works of George Bruce, Ernest Vajda and Jesse Lasky Jr. So the director won’t be leaving anything to chance as he tells the story of the best actor in the world, Rupert Sebastian Thomas Jr, while he raises hell in Paris, where he’s gone to perform for the illustrious Comédie-Française. If you’ve ever seen Tarantino films (and who hasn’t?) you know what you’re in for.
If it delivers, we’ll see acrobatic fights, straight-up sword combat, a script as electrifying as ever and a cast that, as promised, will be “incredible”. The takeaway? Well, that we won’t be getting Tarantino’s tenth film anytime soon. It’ll be enough if someday we get to see it.
