Jamie Campbell Bower, the British actor who has brought Vecna to life in Stranger Things, has taken his portrayal of the character to new and disturbing depths in the second volume of the fifth season.
His approach has transformed Vecna, who initially seemed to be a supernatural villain, into a more complex and psychological figure, capable of manipulating and seducing those around him, especially the younger ones.
According to Bower, to build this new portrait of the character, he was inspired by disturbing historical figures, such as Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple, whose infamous connection to the mass suicide in Jonestown in 1978 has influenced his performance.
A completely unexpected season finale
“What we saw in the fourth season happened and was real. It’s like asking: how kind can I be to these poor kids so they feel as comfortable as possible in this world?” Bower reflects, highlighting the character’s duality between kindness and latent violence.
Despite the darkness that has begun to envelop Vecna, the actor insists that there is still a human dimension present. “I definitely see some humanity in him. There is trauma and experience in his story, but it hasn’t been fully explored,” he comments.
This humanity will further develop in the anticipated prequel ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’, which will address the complicated background of Henry, the identity behind Vecna.
Meanwhile, Bower has warned fans to prepare for an unexpected ending. “The end of the seventh chapter is an incredible setup for what’s to come. If you think you know what awaits you at the beginning of the eighth, you’re probably wrong… It’s a bombshell. Everything you think you know is far surpassed,” concludes the actor.
