This is FromSoftware’s first and only major expansion. It launched on June 21, 2024 and sends players into the Land of Shadow, a new region said to be larger than Limgrave. There’s a lot packed into it too: more than 10 new bosses, eight new weapon categories, and its own progression system. One catch before you can get in, though, you need to beat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood.
It’s easy to see why critics were so high on Shadow of the Erdtree. They praised its scale, its hidden paths and secrets, the environmental design, and the way exploration stays brutal but satisfying. Some players did push back on the boss difficulty, and parts of the area design drew criticism as well. Even so, it still sold more than 5 million copies in its first week.
Whether you’re coming back to Elden Ring or jumping in for the first time, this expansion is worth picking up. And the series didn’t stop growing there. The Road to the Erdtree volume three came out in May 2024, total Elden Ring sales topped 30 million by April 2025, and Elden Ring: Nightreign, a standalone three-player co-op survival game, is planned for 2025.
