That Elon Musk has revolutionized Twitter since his arrival is not exactly a secret. Since the mogul laid his hands on the social network, everything has changed, including the usage trends of its users. This is demonstrated by a new study from Pew Research, which states that the majority of American users have been taking a break from Twitter, at least in the past year.
And that’s not all. Those who used to post the most on the social media platform have also reduced their frequency of posting. According to the data, “6 out of 10 Americans who have used Twitter in the past 12 months claim to have taken a break from the platform for several weeks or even longer.” These findings were extracted from a survey conducted with 10,701 active Twitter users.
Elon Musk’s constant changes on Twitter, the introduction of Twitter Blue, the layoffs, the verification process, and many other factors have ultimately taken a toll on the social media platform. Pew Research has also closely monitored the actual behavior of 1,002 highly active users on the platform, and the evidence is clear: there has been a decrease in postings of up to 25% since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter became effective.
The behavior of users has indeed changed. Now more than ever, Twitter is populated by “readers” (or lurkers, as it’s often said) who don’t post but only follow others. However, there may still be hope for Twitter. Many of the users who have fled in panic may return, at least after some time. According to Pew Research, only 25% of these users have decided to “permanently” abandon the platform.
