The Starship from SpaceX is about to take to the skies again. The most powerful rocket ever built, standing at 122 meters tall, will perform its fifth test flight in four weeks, as announced by Elon Musk a few days ago on Twitter.
Starship is composed of two parts: a first-stage booster called Super Heavy and an upper-stage spacecraft known as Ship, both reusable. So far, four test flights have been conducted: in April and November 2023, and on March 14th and June 6th of this year, all from Starbase, SpaceX’s operations center in southern Texas.
Starship flights have been progressively improving. The most recent one carried out on June 6th, was a resounding success; the Super Heavy and the Ship separated on time and returned to Earth, landing in the Gulf of Mexico and the Indian Ocean, respectively. This success has facilitated a quick return for the next flight, as SpaceX has fewer technical issues to solve and the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States has not required a new investigation.
If everything goes according to plan, the fifth Starship flight will have to face an additional challenge: SpaceX will attempt to recover the rocket by landing it precisely on the Starbase launch platform. This process will be aided by the mechanical arms of the launch tower “Mechazilla,” designed to capture and stabilize the rocket during its return.
This strategy aims to increase the frequency of Starship flights. According to Musk, the ability to quickly inspect, refurbish, and relaunch the booster will allow SpaceX to advance its goal of making space travel more accessible and frequent, taking rocket reusability to a new level and making space flights increasingly efficient and sustainable.
