Mission Impossible continues to rise as one of the most important action franchises in history. Since Brian De Palma directed the first installment in 1996, the franchise has continued to grow and mature alongside its star, Tom Cruise. Now, it has reached its seventh installment, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning – Part 1. And, as the name suggests, it is only the first part of a two-part film series that tells a single story.
However, the ending of the first part of these two movies has left some questions among the audience. And, since it will be necessary to understand it perfectly to approach Mission Impossible 8, we are here to explain everything you need to know so that you won’t be lost in the future of Cruise’s saga.
The Entity: Mission Impossible’s biggest villain is an AI
Throughout the film, the protagonist Ethan Hunt must confront an enemy for which he has not been prepared: an Artificial Intelligence. For the first time in the franchise, the villain is intangible but uses everything at its disposal to challenge the hero, from the sinister Gabriel (Esai Morales) to the assassin Paris (Pom Klementieff).
For over two and a half hours, Ethan Hunt faces this threat and does everything possible to defeat the AI. To do so, he follows a clear MacGuffin: he must find the two halves of a key that he needs to control the AI and put an end to its villainous actions.

The movie concludes with Ethan Hunt on the Orient Express, where the second half of the key is located. Here, he engages in dozens of action-packed scenes, including what has been dubbed “the most dangerous stunt in history,” as Cruise jumps into the void with a motorcycle.
Finally, after a hand-to-hand confrontation with Gabriel, the enemy escapes, but Hunt obtains the coveted key. With it, he will be able to confront the AI… but we will have to wait until Mission Impossible 8, the film in which everything will come to a head.
