Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, a real-time strategy game based on HBO’s adaptation, is now slated for early 2027 on PC through Steam after previously carrying a 2026 window. Separate from that, neither HBO nor George R.R. Martin has announced any removal or replacement of Jon Snow in the core franchise.
So if you’ve seen claims that Jon Snow is being replaced, they aren’t coming from any official announcement. HBO and George R.R. Martin haven’t said Jon Snow is being removed, replaced, or pushed out of the core franchise.
War for Westeros is a separate interactive project built around the HBO adaptation. It’s being described as a game where you can choose House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the White Walkers, then reshape the war through armies, territory control, and alternate outcomes.
Jon Snow is also still listed in the game as a playable hero, alongside Robb Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Jaime Lannister, Arya Stark, and the Night King. So the shift here is away from having a single lead character, not away from Jon Snow himself.
If you follow the wider franchise, that’s part of why this keeps getting tangled up with the uncertain Jon Snow sequel series. That project has gone through reports saying it was shelved or canceled, even though Kit Harington later hinted there was renewed interest. Meanwhile, HBO keeps expanding the world with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight and other reported projects, including Aegon’s Conquest, The Sea Snake, 10,000 Ships, and a Yi Ti animated series.
