Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie are one of the most famous and significant duos in contemporary cinema. Both of their careers are intimately bound up with each other and it’s hard to imagine how either of them would have made it without the other. That’s why it’s always good news to know they’re going to work together again on a film, thus going back to where it all began. This marks their eighth collaboration together to date.
Two men closely linked
Because Netflix has announced Dogfight, a film they describe as “a stylish revenge action film” set in London’s criminal underworld, directed, written and produced by Guy Ritchie and starring Jason Statham. Though they haven’t given any more details about the film beyond that brief description, which would fit the vast majority of Guy Ritchie’s filmography just fine. And basically all of the collaborations between the two.
Director and actor made their film debut with the same movie in 1988, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which, while it was a huge success with critics and audiences, wouldn’t be the one that truly set them on the road to stardom. That would come two years later with Snatch, where Statham would have a much more significant role, catapulting both of their careers by becoming an international success with critics and audiences. After that, Statham has collaborated on four more of the director’s films (Revolver, RocknRolla, Wrath of Man and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre) and a fifth yet to be released, Viva La Madness.
Until more details about this new project emerge, a lot of stylized action is to be expected, with blood, guns and a trademark sardonic humor. But to learn more we’ll still have to wait until Netflix or those involved reveal details at some point in the future.
