HBO Max has started production in Mexico City on Mataviejitas: The Serial Killer, a dramatized series drawn from the case of Juana Barraza. The project adds another major title to the platform’s growing slate of Latin American originals.
The thriller goes back to Barraza, the former wrestler known as La Mataviejitas and The Lady of Silence. She was convicted of killing at least 16 elderly women in Mexico City between the late 1990s and early 2000s, usually posing as a government official or social worker before strangling and robbing them. HBO Max says the series will cover the investigation, the fear that spread across the city, and the pressure mounting on police, with Mayra Hermosillo and Mónica Jiménez leading the cast.
Exile Content is producing for HBO Max, with Humberto Hinojosa serving as showrunner and co-director alongside J.M. Cravioto. If you follow Mexican true crime, that alone makes this one to watch, mostly because it seems set on telling the story from a distinctly Mexican point of view, shaped by Mexico City’s culture and the way the case still lingers in public memory.
It comes after Netflix’s 2023 documentary The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders, and while the creative team says it’s approaching the case with respect, the usual concerns are still there: sensationalism, reopening wounds for families, and turning a painful piece of history into entertainment. No response from victims’ relatives has been reported so far, and the series will stream on HBO Max when it premieres.
