A newly published review paper argues that autonomous medical software may outperform doctors by 2030. Looking at studies published since 1 January 2024, the authors say standalone systems could do better than physicians, and even better than doctor-AI teams, in taking medical histories, making diagnoses, choosing tests, treating patients, and managing chronic disease. They also say human oversight can sometimes make the results less accurate.
Lead author Ezekiel Emanuel says the newer evidence changed his mind. John Whyte of the American Medical Association says the field still isn’t there yet, partly because some of the results come from simulations. Still, the figures cited in the review are striking: software scored 67.1% in triage, compared with 50% to 55.3% for physicians, and 78% in diagnosis versus roughly 30%.
If you follow medical AI, one detail in the review stands out. Doctor use rose from 38% in 2023 to 81% in 2026, mostly for summaries and notes.
The paper also says the market is expected to jump from $36.7 billion in 2025 to $505.6 billion by 2033. By early 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had authorized 1,357 software-enabled devices, many of them in radiology.
You can read the review now, but it also points to a trust gap: nearly 80% of people were worried about AI-generated advice in 2025, and 78% of patients in 2026 wanted doctors to verify it.
