HBO’s Harry Potter TV series is moving forward with a different musical voice. Hans Zimmer says the reboot will stay “as far away as possible” from John Williams’ Harry Potter score.
If “Hedwig’s Theme” is still the sound you hear the second someone mentions the wizarding world, that’s exactly the challenge. Zimmer’s view is simple: nobody’s getting close to what Williams did, so the HBO series isn’t trying to copy it. It’s building new motifs and longer musical arcs for a story meant to play out over time, with one season for each J.K. Rowling novel under showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod.
Zimmer has dealt with this kind of baggage before. After coming in after Williams on Superman, he said Zack Snyder’s “It’s just a movie” advice on Man of Steel helped him stop getting stuck on legacy. For Harry Potter, he’s developing the score with Bleeding Fingers Music composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman.
If this reboot is going to earn its place, that break in approach probably makes sense, even if fans are already split. Some see John Williams as inseparable from Hogwarts. Others think a new sound is the only way this version has a chance to stand on its own.
