Actually, Darkwing Duck didn’t start out as Drake Mallard, but rather… Launchpad McQuack, the pilot from DuckTales who in one episode turned himself into a secret agent. However, when it came time to create this duck-verse adventure, they realized they needed a unique character. That’s how the terror that flaps in the night was born, the superhero duck St. Canard needed: Darkwing Duck!
Time to spring into action (again)
For years there had been rumors that Darkwing Duck would make a comeback, especially after the success of his appearances in the DuckTales reboot, but Disney hadn’t said anything… until now. The thing is, Disney+ will debut a new take on the hero, although we still don’t know when… And it’ll do so with big, very big, gigantic changes that haven’t gone down well with everyone.
The thing is, Darkwing’s original voice actor, Jim Cummings, has been replaced by Mark Hamill, who’s also a famous voice actor best known for playing Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, and lifelong fans, even though the character hasn’t had his own series since 1992, have taken it like a kick in the teeth. Besides, Launchpad McQuack will now be voiced by Seth Rogen, adding insult to injury. I admit I’m delighted, honestly.

The story couldn’t be more meta: for 35 years, Darkwing has been trapped in a world where no one knows about his superhero exploits, but a teenager who knows everything about his past forces him back into the fight. And of course, as you’d expect, it’ll be time to spring into action against the usual enemies alongside the usual allies. After how well DuckTales turned out, it’s hard not to get a little excited.
