In an unexpected turn for fans of the saga, Hogwarts Legacy, the successful video game based on the Harry Potter universe, will not receive an expansion or a re-release as a Definitive Edition this year, according to a report from Bloomberg. This news about new content, not even having been confirmed, has been canceled as part of the restructuring of Warner Bros. Discovery’s video game division.
A project for the future?
Sources indicate that the decision to cancel the expansion is due to Warner Bros’ concern about the amount of content that had been planned, which did not justify the expected selling price. Originally, the expansion was set to introduce new storylines in the popular open-world RPG, while the Definitive Edition was to include the base game along with the expansion and other downloadable content.
Despite this cancellation, Avalanche Software, the game’s developer, continues to work on a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, which represents one of the company’s top priorities. This new project underscores Warner Bros’ commitment to focusing on established franchises, as other projects have recently been canceled, including a Wonder Woman game, and several studios have been closed, including Monolith, known for the Middle-Earth series.
It is noteworthy that, despite the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling and her controversial opinions, Hogwarts Legacy has remained the best-selling video game of 2023 in the United States, surpassing other notable titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. With the cancellation of the expansion, eyes are expected to be on the upcoming sequel and how the developers plan to move forward within a context of significant changes in the company.
