It may not have traditionally been the most used button on the PlayStation controller, but it has been there for a decade, since the PS4 was launched. We’re talking, of course, about “Share,” the option Sony provides to share screenshots and short videos directly to YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. And mind you, it’s more widely used than it seems. In fact, with the hashtag #PS5share, we can see up to 20 posts per minute. But all of this is coming to an end.

Elon Musk‘s platform continues to face a string of bad news. The latest, and perhaps most surprising, is that Sony is going to remove integration with Twitter (if you call it X, I’m sorry, we can’t be friends). The change will take place on November 13, and Sony has not provided any explanation in a brief statement indicating that if you liked sharing images of what you were playing, well, tough luck.
You also won’t be able to “view any content posted on X on PS5/PS4 or post and view game-related content, trophies, and activities.” In fact, it won’t even allow linking your Twitter profile with the console. While it’s tempting to imagine conspiracy theories, the truth is that it most likely has to do with changes imposed on the social network’s API that have caused issues in third-party applications.
Perhaps in another era, when Twitter was a vital place to be, Sony might have fought to stay there. But with the platform slowly fading and withering away as it loses users in droves, they have decided it’s much easier to cut ties. You’ll still be able to upload content to Facebook and YouTube, but something tells us that in the future PS6, the Share button might disappear without further explanations. We’ll see if by that time Twitter still exists at all.
