Bungie updated Marathon today, June 16, with temporary Season 2 loot nerfs. The studio said on Steam and across its social channels that by week two, players had already piled up the kind of wealth the average Season 1 player usually didn’t hit until week 11 or 12.
According to Bungie, several issues stacked on top of each other: bugs that effectively guaranteed high-tier gold, Sponsored Kits becoming available too early, widespread use of Sponsored Survival, and at least one unresolved problem that Bungie says is still driving rare drop rates higher than they should be.
That matters in an extraction shooter, especially one built around risk and scarcity. If top-tier gear starts flowing too early, the tension drops off and progression stops feeling like progression.
If you play Marathon regularly, you’ll probably want this update installed.
Per Bungie’s patch notes, the studio has already nerfed Cradle XP, disabled boosted containers, fixed some bugs, and cut both prestige drop rates and overall loot quality in the June 16 patch while it works on longer-term fixes.
The reaction hasn’t landed cleanly. Some casual players think the rollback is unfair, mostly because early adopters already got the upside before the changes hit. A lot of dedicated players and streamers, though, are backing the guardrails, in much the same way Bungie has spent years tuning and retuning the economy in Destiny 2.
The June 16 patch is already live in Marathon, and Bungie’s full explanation is up on Steam and across the company’s social channels.
So far, most of the conversation has come from English-speaking creators, not from deeper economy-focused breakdowns or region-by-region analysis.
