I’ll be honest: Martin Scorsese could make a movie with my worst archenemy and I’d still pay to see it. He’s earned that after years and years of masterpieces, from Goodfellas to The Wolf of Wall Street. So, of course, if none other than Charli XCX herself is in the cast of his upcoming film What Happens At Night alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, who am I to say no?
One of our own
Scorsese had already worked with her before: he was one of the three figures featured prominently on the cover of her record Music, Fashion, Film alongside John Cale and Marc Jacobs. And it seems their friendship didn’t stop there, because the director cast her in his new film… although, according to rumors, it’ll be just a cameo. Enough to keep her million-strong fanbase paying attention.
The film, at first glance, has nothing to do with pop: it’s a psychological drama in which an American couple travels to Europe to adopt a child, and only to discover they don’t really know themselves. It’s worth noting that Charli XCX became famous with her album Brat, but in recent years she’s tried, one way or another, to carve out a place for herself in film with appearances in movies like I want your sex, Erupcja or Faces of Death. Hey, nobody said they had to be mainstream movies.
The film will be released next year, four years after Killers of the Flower Moon surprised everyone and earned 10 Oscar nominations. Will Charli XCX end up winning one someday as an actress? For now, at 34, the sky’s the limit.
